Jericho is a rugged mountain town beside Burlington
Jericho appeals for its stock of secluded homes and rural atmosphere among Vermont's Green Mountains while being commuter-friendly to major employers around Burlington. Residents appreciate the community's access to highly ranked public schools, parks and regional attractions like Stowe Mountain Resort. Due to the snowy, mountainous environment, Jericho also hosts the Camp Ethan Allen Training Site, an army training center for mountaineering and long-distance sharpshooting.
Hiking and skiing in the Green Mountains
Mobbs Farm is a privately owned park with forested hiking and horseback riding trails. Cross-country skiing is available in winter, and deer hunting is popular in appropriate seasons. Smugglers Notch is a pass in the Green Mountains, several miles east of town, popular for its ski resorts and picturesque hiking trails. Locals can explore the woods along Sterling Pond Trail or head south to ski and golf at Stowe Mountain Resort, a large regional attraction.
Local restaurants and shops along Vermont Route 15
Several local businesses line Vermont Route 15 for dining and shopping. The Jericho Café & Tavern is a popular brunch and dinner stop, offering everything from clam chowder to burgers and beef brisket. Palmer Lane Maple is further east, with homemade ice cream, candies and locally sourced Vermont maple syrup. Locals can get groceries from Jericho Market or Jacobs Family Market, which also makes deli sandwiches.
Jericho Farmers Market teaches kids business skills
The Jericho Farmers Market runs on Thursday afternoons from May to October and offers numerous local vendors selling fresh produce, meats and other farm goods. The farmers' market also hosts Kids Day, a one-time event during the market season where children in town can experience vending and sell handmade crafts and lemonade from stands.
Country homes on spacious land
Jericho's single-family homes range from $300,000 to $1.2 million, varying by square footage and lot size. Buyers can find open-porch farmhouses, ramblers and Colonial Revivals on expansive multi-acre lots along winding mountain roads. "The land lots are a big draw for residents who want to build chicken coops, and some homeowners do small hobby farming and gardening," says Amanda Gerlack, a lifelong Vermonter and listing and selling partner with Nancy Jenkins Real Estate. Residents who live close to Camp Ethan Allen might hear occasional noise from the base, as there is an active firing range on site.
The Army's Camp Ethan Allen Training Site is part of town
Camp Ethan Allen Training Site is a military installation spanning 11,000 acres in Jericho. The base houses the Vermont National Guard and the Army Mountain Warfare School, where trainees learn how to operate in mountains and snowy conditions. Camp Ethan Allen is occasionally opened to the public for tours or to use the base's long-distance firing range.
Zoned for top-ranked Vermont public schools
Mount Mansfield Unified School District Union School District No. 401 serves Jericho for education and is ranked by Niche as the second-best school district in Vermont. Students can attend Jericho Elementary, Browns River Middle, and Mount Mansfield Union High School, which all receive A-minus ratings from Niche. Mount Mansfield Union High educates students through career planning with the school's MMU Progression, a program offering community service and job shadowing opportunities for rising seniors.
Commute to Burlington in half an hour
Due to Jericho's spacious, secluded homes and rural environment, residents tend to be car-dependent. "Some folks live in Jericho and work around Burlington, though work-from-home is also popular for residents," says Gerlack. "Essex is another town nearby where people tend to work." Commuters can take either Route 15 or Interstate 89, just 14 miles west, to reach Burlington for work or leisure. Burlington International Airport is 15 miles from home and offers domestic flights.
