Quiet days along the waters of Lake Boone
Oak Grove is home to one of Johnson City’s largest waterfront communities, granting an array of recreational opportunities atop the waters of Boone Lake. Home to calm residential streets, the community has also welcomed a handful of suburban-like subdivisions in recent years. However, considering its 8-mile distance from the hubbub of downtown, most do their shopping and dining along North Roan Street closer to home and attend events at the longstanding Appalachian Fairgrounds in the neighboring community of Gray. “I can feel the influx of people coming in because I have lived here my whole life, but it’s still a relatively quiet area and overall city,” says Amy Versaw, Realtor with Keller Williams – Carter Properties Group, and native who lives in northern Johnson City.
A variety of homes styles are available in Oak Grove.

Cooling off at Boone Lake Beach and purchasing rentals from Rockingham Marina
Situated a mile northeast of the community, off Boone Dam Road, Boone Lake Beach offers ample -parking that leads to a zoned-off swimming area to cool off from the summer heat. Alongside taking a dip in the lake, visits to the beach include picnics within the shade of old-growth trees or at one of several provided picnic tables, as well as catching glimpses of local wildlife. Meanwhile, those spending time on the water can tube, waterski or fish for bass and catfish. For those without personal watercraft, Rockingham Marina, less than a mile southeast of the neighborhood, offers rentals as well as supplies sold in its Marine Store and Café.

From wooded ranch styles to a-line waterfront homes
Mid-to-late-20th-century ranch-style homes run along the community’s winding residential roads, where dense forestry provides a sense of rurality and privacy. These wooded portions open up to subdivisions developed at the turn of the century, filled with New Traditional-style homes. Closer to the shores of Boone Lake are one and two-story a-frame-style houses offering water views. Many along the waterfront feature private docks, providing a place to store boats and relax by the water. “It lost its appeal because of how muddy it got when they drained the lake for dam repairs," Versaw says. "People didn’t really go out on the lake. However, after the refilling in the last couple of years, people started getting back on the lake and property values went up again.” Prices for a home in Oak Grove range from $200,000 to $450,000, while larger recently built or waterfront homes can reach up to $600,000.
