Residents return to Craftsman homes after a day outdoors
Those who don't own farmland in Herrold live near Saylorville Lake, along Northwest Beaver Drive. Most live in Craftsman or ranch-style homes with three bedrooms, paved driveways and large yards. Many homes in Herrold were built in the late 90s and early 2000s. In the Sunset Ridge community, skinny sidewalks line the streets and cul-de-sacs, making it easy for residents to walk down to the community mailboxes to collect letters. Those in the Eagle Pointe community can walk down their long driveways to check their personal mailboxes. Eagle Pointe homes are larger and feature Tudor-inspired designs with stone siding and large lots. Eight homes were sold throughout 2023, which means people stay put when they get the chance to move into Herrold. Home prices here can range from $500,000 to $700,000.Soaking up the sun at Saylorville Lake
Acorn Valley Campground gives residents easy access to Saylorville Lake alongside the park's RV-friendly camping area. Here, residents from across the region relax in the woods or by the lake. Other popular spots include the Saylorville boat ramp for sailing in the open water and Oak Grove Beach on the lake's eastern border for suntanning and cooling off in the water. Parents and kids take advantage of the easy parking right next to the playground set in the Acorn Valley Recreation Area before playing the day away. Disc golfers practice their throws at the nearby 18-hole Walnut Ridge Disc Golf Course. Families also spend time at the Johnston Town Center to play on the splash pad, shop around at the farmers market in the summer or catch a live concert during the Yard Summer Concert Series in July and August. It's showtime at Johnston High
Wallace Elementary and Johnston Middle School share the same campus, and both get an A from Niche. Students spend their sophomore through senior years at the A-minus-rated Johnston High School. Here, students might try out for the state championship-winning track and field team or show off their singing skills in the show choir. JHS also hosts the annual show choir competition, Showzam. Show choir groups from around the Johnston School District visit JHS to perform and compete for the top spot.Driving down Northwest Beaver Drive

Herrold residents of all ages gather at Johnston Commons Park every May for the Kites on the Green Festival. Visitors can bring their colorful kites or pick up a build-your-own kit. Visitors come dressed in their Halloween costumes to eat at local food trucks, hop in bounce houses and fill their buckets during the candy crawl.Shopping and dining in nearby Grimes and Johnston
