Quaint neighborhood with lots to do
Homes with rich connections to the local culture of Joliet, convenient access to a lively downtown and a balanced suburban vibe are daily expectations in Cathedral Area. City living with a residential focus is a reliable element of this neighborhood’s identity, with much of that status coming from its central location just west of downtown Joliet and the Des Plaines River. With Chicago 47 miles northeast, folks are connected without having to worry about navigating a huge city. “There are lots of factors that draw folks to the Cathedral Area. You have any home style you can think of, improving public schools, and it’s safe, too. It’s a good spot for families with young children. Plus, Harrah’s Joliet is right across the Des Plaines River if you fancy a roll of the dice,” says Alex Chavez, a real estate agent with HomeSmart Realty Group. Chavez has sold homes in Joliet and greater Chicagoland since 2020.
Historic Victorian homes
Single-family homes with a traditional look are common, including influences from Dutch Colonial, Tudor and Victorian styles. Ranch, split-level, bungalow and Prairie-style homes are also common. Many of the homes date to the early decades of the 20th century and hold places on the Cathedral Area Preservation Association’s lists of locally historic homes. Values typically range from $130,000 to $430,000. Multi-family homes in Cathedral Area include a few converted two-flat homes, condos, and townhouses. Units are usually available from $100,000 to $400,000.
True to the name, several houses of worship are situated between residential blocks here, including the Cathedral of St. Raymond Nonnatus, which opened in 1919, and First Presbyterian Church on Raynor Avenue and the Joliet Jewish Congregation and Lively Hope Church of God in Christ near Midland Avenue. The cathedral is a landmark in the neighborhood, largely because of its 190-foot tall tower which houses five bells, the largest of which weighs 2 tons.
Many Cathedral Area homes in Joliet offer two-stories and over 1500 sq. ft of living space.
