A breezy, residential town in an island valley
Perched amid the foothills between the coast and the mountains of Kaua’i, Kalaheo is a placid town on the island's south shore. A handful of local businesses sit along the highway, while colorful homes are tucked away in the trees, providing serene views of the tropical setting. “Kalaheo is at a higher elevation, so it’s got a unique climate. It rains almost every night, but it’s sunny during the day,” says Yvonne Summerfield, a Realtor with Re/Max Kaua’i Living who sells homes across the island. “It’s not really in a vacation rental area. You get cool breezes and ocean views, and at a price that’s a little more affordable than right on the beach.” Kalaheo residents are roughly 15 minutes from basking in the sun and sand at popular resort hotspot Poipu Beach. But back home, their secluded valley retreat seamlessly blends beautiful landscapes with everyday living.

Candy-colored homes with stunning hillside outlooks
Homes in Kalaheo sit along steep, winding roads lined by dense ferns and flowering trees. Here, the narrow roads are tinged copper due to Kaua’i’s trademark red soil, and pastel-painted houses stand out against the earthy hues and verdant landscape. Ranch-style homes are common, as are beachy two-story houses with wraparound porches and native flora dotting the lawns. Prices start in the mid-$500,000 range for a condo or townhouse, while spacious ocean-view homes on a full acre lot can list for nearly $2 million. The median price, at about $1.2 million, is enough to purchase a four-bedroom single-family home with balconies that offer glimpses of the mountains and the sea alike.
Kalaheo offers a perfect balance of rural tranquility and modern conveniences.

A golf course with a view
One of Kalaheo’s best-known attractions is Kukuiolono Park and Golf Course, which encompasses a challenging 9-hole golf course with palm tree-lined fairways and coastal views in addition to a mini-golf course where the little ones can learn to swing. It was once believed that Kukiolono, the Hawaiian God of Agriculture, lived atop the park’s hill — and it’s not hard to see why, given the lush greenery that carpets the plateau. Today, the park is a favorite among locals for its walking trails, which wind through a Japanese garden to a meditation pavilion surrounded by bonsai trees and trickling fountains. Other athletes head to Kalawai Park to practice their game at the softball diamond and the tennis courts. This park is also a family favorite for its playground and youth games on the soccer field.

Fun in the sun along sparkling island coastlines
Residents can start or end their day watching the sun from Kaua’i’s famous Poipu Beach, just 15 minutes from home. Sea turtles and monk seals are frequent visitors on the shore, and though Poipu is a known tourist spot, there are a number of quieter inlets where locals can catch some waves nearby.

Local restaurants and everyday goods are close to home
With a total population of just over 5,000, Kalaheo is by no means a big town. But residents here have enough to get by on a day-to-day basis without traveling far, as local businesses cluster close to home along the Kaumauli’i Highway. Residents can start their day with a cup from Kalaheo Café or grab lunch from Brick Oven Pizza. Those with a sweet tooth can satisfy their dessert cravings with a pie from The Right Slice or a sweet confection from Kauai Kookie. Home chefs can check off most of their grocery list at Lawa'i Market or Medeiros Farms, with pharmaceuticals and other sundries found at Kaleo’s. A colorful array of local businesses cater to residents’ other needs, from surf shops to yoga studios.

Off-island travel and big-box shopping in Lihue
“Kalaheo is right in the middle between Kekaha and Lihue, so it’s a great compromise for people who work on the PMRF base on the west shore but also want to be able to get to the stores like Costco in Lihue,” Summerfield says. Situated along the Kaumauli’i Highway, Lihue is approximately a 20-minute drive east, where flights between the Hawaiian Islands and the US mainland depart from the Lihue Airport. It’s also home to the island’s major medical centers and big-box shopping.
Locals can head to Lihue, which is a short drive away, for larger retail outlets.
Lihue Airport is only about 20 minutes away from Kalaheo.
