Baseball and community
Derek Jeter may have been born in New Jersey, but his baseball career began in a Kalamazoo neighborhood called Westwood. Growing up on Cumberland Street in Westwood, Jeter attended Kalamazoo Central High School, which now holds a baseball field named in Jeter’s honor. Today, the sport is a vital part of this leafy, green-lawned neighborhood. “A lot of local businesses will sponsor a little league team,” says Michael Rotger, a full-time equipment operator with the Kalamazoo Fire Department. The sponsored jerseys, Rotger says, show more than the community’s love for baseball, though. “It really shows how much people here love and support the community.”

Higher-priced homes on green lots
“Usually there’s a premium on homes in Westwood as opposed to other areas,” says Ben Barber, Realtor with Keller Williams Kalamazoo. “The schools are good, and the township taxes are lower than in the city.” Single-bedroom ranch-style homes with roughly 1,000 square feet sell for around $100,000, while 2,200 square foot three-bedroom Colonial homes sell for about $330,000. The median price is $215,000, and home styles include ranch homes, bungalows, Cape Cods and Colonials. Homes sit on neatly trimmed, nearly half-acre lots boasting tall, broad oaks and sprawling silver maples.

Michigan’s oldest public high school
Elementary-age children can attend pre-kindergarten through fifth grade at King-Westwood Elementary School, which earns a B-plus on Niche. Hillside Middle School serves Westwood students with 6th through 8th grade classes and earns a C. Derek Jeter’s alma mater, Kalamazoo Central High School, was also the first public high school in Michigan, opening in 1858. Kalamazoo Central High School earns a B.

Frays Park and Stroud Family Playground
At 11 acres, Frays Park is Westwood’s largest community park. Set between Piccadilly Road and Northampton Road in the middle of a residential enclave, the park is a grassy field speckled with relatively young maples, aspens and white oaks that provide shade for park-goers to enjoy. The paved biking and walking path loops around the park with a cut-through in the middle, by the children’s playground. Warmer months bring pickleballers and tennis lovers to the park’s courts. On Grand Prairie Road, the Stroud Family Playground also holds tennis and pickleball courts, as well as a baseball field and a small playground.

Bread and magic made right in Westwood
One of Westwood’s most unique shops comes with an equally unique owner. Antony Gerard, magician and owner of Timid Rabbit Magic and Masquerade Shop on West Main Street, has served the Westwood community since 1990, died more than 20 times and created a custom mask for Slipknot’s former bassist. “We have more than 700 novelties we make ourselves,” Gerard says. “We could make more money only opening from mid-September to mid-November, but we stay open and do it for the community.” Two of Westwood’s most popular restaurants sit less than half a mile down Main Street from Timid Rabbit. Nina’s Café makes their own bread, which they cut up for their homemade French toast, and Saffron Indian Cuisine draws a decent crowd with its lunch buffet. For groceries, Westwood residents head to Harding’s Market on the west side of the neighborhood on West Main Street.

West Main Street takes people places
Some of Westwood’s residential streets don’t have sidewalks, but the roads are wide enough to walk safely. West Main Street is lined with sidewalks and Kalamazoo Metro bus stops and connects to State Route 131, which can take drivers to Interstate 94.
Garage sales and Little League baseball
Westwood's events are mainly small, community-organized events. At one point, the Westwood station of the Kalamazoo Fire Department ran the longest-running ice cream social in the country, but it hasn’t been able to secure approval for the social since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Westwood Neighborhood Association regularly plans garage sales, and little league baseball games are a big attraction during the season.

Westwood for life
Residents of Westwood tend to stay, so available inventory tends to be low compared to other areas of Kalamazoo. “My wife’s father is also in Westwood,” Rotgers says. “Westwood is going to be home until I die. It’s a welcoming environment for both lifelong families and new families looking to put down permanent roots.”
