Independence Plaza has historic homes to fix up
Independence Plaza is most known for its Victorian-style homes with vibrant paint and large front porches. While many older properties need repairs, others have been renovated to give them modern interiors while maintaining their historic exteriors. The neighborhood is known for its early 20th-century residences, but there are also split-level and Craftsman homes from the 1970s. All these properties are built close together, and small front yards and street parking are the norm. Prices for Independence Plaza typically range between $100,000 and $200,000, and some renovated homes can sell for $250,000 to $400,000. Independence Avenue is a Community Improvement District
Independence Avenue is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, where residents will find small grocery stores like El Mercado Fresco, cafes like Core Coffee, and houses of worship like Independence Boulevard Christian Church, which has stood in the same spot since 1905. Over the last decade, businesses on Independence Avenue have worked together to turn the street into a Community Improvement District to attract more interest in the area. “We want to reduce the crime and grime, we want to enhance the perception of the community and advertise that we are creating an international marketplace on Independence Avenue,” says Bobbi Baker-Hughes, a Kansas City native and CEO of the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. Gates Bar B-Q, a Kansas City staple, is a few blocks away on Brooklyn Avenue and is famous for its homemade sauce and spices. The owner has even been inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame. The closest mall is the Crown Center, 3 miles away on downtown Kansas City’s Main Street.

Independence Plaza Park’s modern makeover
The neighborhood is home to small city parks, including Independence Plaza Park, which is divided into two parts on both sides of Independence Avenue. The park received $1.2 million in improvements in 2022, including a universally accessible playground, hiking trails and a pickleball court. “This park has been around for well over a century, and from time to time it’s gotten a facelift. But this newest one means a lot to the residents and especially the kids who live here,” says Scott Wagner, a Clay County commissioner and a former Kansas City Council member. The large Kessler Park is a mile away on Lexington Avenue and has a fishing lake, miles of hiking trails and historic landmarks like Kessler Park Reservoir, The Colonnade and the Kansas City Museum. The park is south of the Missouri River, but levees help protect it from flooding.
