Fans of the cinematic favorite “A Christmas Story” remember the “major award” that the protagonist’s father won in the days leading up to the special holiday: a lamp in the shape of a woman’s leg. While it has been the subject of many a belly laugh, the lamp itself – and the movie that made it famous – are reminiscent of simpler times in the American heartland. So perhaps it’s not a coincidence that the outline of the Winnwood Gardens neighborhood bears a striking resemblance to the infamous lamp. But in a good way.

Located 15 minutes by car north of downtown Kansas City, Winwood Gardens is an unassuming neighborhood, where ranch-style homes predominate along streets shaded by mature trees. With a median listing price of $153,000, homes in the neighborhood are some of the most affordable in the area. Ron Henderson, a real estate agent with Keller Williams Realty, says, “Homes in the area are relatively affordable. It’s a comfortable, established neighborhood.” A typical two-bedroom/one-bathroom ranch-style house sells for under $100,000, while a three-bedroom/two-bathroom raised ranch-style lists for $232,000.

Neighborhood students can attend Maplewood Elementary, Maple Park Middle and Winnetonka High School. Winnetonka currently holds the distinction of being the only school in the state of Missouri to be recognized as an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Demonstration School. AVID distinction is granted based on a school’s ability to prepare students for college, and only 210 public schools in the United States have achieved the status of Demonstration School.

Occupying the neighborhood’s southeast edge is part of Hidden Valley Park, a nearly 200-acre park that includes a lighted asphalt walking trail, playground, nine-hole disc golf course and picnic tables with nearby grills in the northern section that lies north of Russell Road. Heading to the southern section takes visitors on 4 miles’ worth of winding trails that venture through the heavily-wooded area that gave the park its original name, due to the fact that the trees hide the area from view.

Living in Winnwood Gardens does require a car, because shopping is some distance away and there are no bus stops in the neighborhood. Neighborhood residents can stock up on groceries at Sun Fresh Market, which is approximately five minutes away by car. Target and CVS Pharmacy are both located next door to the grocery store, meaning shoppers can get their groceries and any other home essentials in one easy trip. And if your shopping excursions take you further afield, that’s easy, too. “The neighborhood has easy access to Interstate 35,” says Henderson, “and you can get to other major roads pretty easily.”

For those nights when dining out is on the menu, there are several nearby restaurants to accommodate a wide array of preferences. Tequila’s Restaurant offers up Mexican fare that includes a selection of nachos, burritos and enchiladas. Mr. Le’s Sushi combines the best of Vietnamese and Japanese cuisines, while Texas Tom’s welcomes hungry diners with fried chicken combos, burgers and chili dogs.

So if it’s a little simpler lifestyle that you seek while still having the option to get into the city for work or play, keep Winwood Gardens in mind. The neighborhood offers attractive homes at comparatively affordable prices, and it’s all tucked away behind the natural wonders of Hidden Valley Park. It might just remind you of being triple-dog-dared to stick your tongue onto a frozen lamppost.
