Rural Hawai’i town home to an exclusive community

South of the tourist-filled resorts in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island of Hawai’i, Kealakekua is a welcome change of pace along the western coast. Thanks to the clustering of residential streets against the backdrop of agricultural Hawai’i, there’s a feeling here of living in the country. Inland, the streets are walkable and close to schools, stores and cafes. Along the coast, the gated Hokuli’a residential development offers private upscale amenities. Chris Stimac, a Realtor with Venture Sotheby’s International Realty who was born and raised in the Kona region, says, “Hokuli’a is so beautiful. It has a fantastic clubhouse, bocce ball and tennis courts, and it’s a very unique setting. It feels like a complete getaway. And yet when you leave the gates, you’re just minutes from all the dining and shopping options both north and south of the neighborhood.”

Oceanfront properties in gated Hokuli’a and cottages closer to town

Inland, various single-level and two-story plantation and cottage-style homes built in the 1980s and ‘90s on moderately hilly streetscapes sell for between $600,000 and $1 million. Homes are often situated atop attractive stone terraces or on manicured lawns set back from sidewalks. On its oceanfront, Kealakekua is home to the Kona region’s largest private luxury community, Hokuli’a, which offers sweeping water and golf course views across three miles of shoreline. Members of the Club of Hokuli’a can take advantage of resort-style amenities, from pools and tennis courts to exclusive shoreline access and social events at the Pavilion restaurant. Most homes in this sought-after community are custom-built, and one-acre oceanfront tend to sell for around $7.5 million, with second-row lots closer to $5 million. On rare occasions, mansions built further inland can pop up for sale with a list price of around $4 million.

A renowned golf course and waterfront access

From any residential street, it’s an easy walk or bike ride to Clarence Lum Won Park for games on the sports fields. Those who live in Hokuli’a can drive down to Shoreline Park, which has walking trails along a craggy coast where sapphire-blue waves lap at rugged lava formations. The park also has a canoe landing and picnic tables, perfect for setting sail or enjoying lunch. However, the real attraction for residents is Hokuli’a’s 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. With its oceanfront views and palm-tree-lined fairways paired with a design that challenges even experienced golfers, the Club at Hokuli’a consistently ranks as one of the best courses in the state of Hawaii.

Locally owned shops and restaurants cluster along a major road

Several casual eateries are dotted along the Mamalahoa Highway in small shopping centers and beachy shacks in the center of Kealakekua. Korner Pocket Sports Bar & Grill is a popular spot for locals to catch up and watch the game, kick back to live music or play a round of pool. For morning hangouts, friends meet at Caffe Florian, where they can enjoy the sea breeze while sipping a cappuccino from the outdoor patio. A handful of local businesses can also be found, from antique stores to community theaters to surf shops, like Kona Boys’ emerald-green surf shack. Stimac says, “My friends own Kona Boys, and they’re the place to go in Kealakekua to rent all kinds of watersports gear, from snorkel equipment to surfboards. They also host tours out of the pier at Kamakahonu Bay.” Beyond island eats and specialty shopping, daily essentials are close at hand. The neighborhood Kealakekua Public Library is right across the street from the KTA Express Superstore, so residents can pick up a beach read and stop for groceries on the way home. There are also several banks and a credit union, as well as the central Kona post office just up the road.

Connected to the rest of the Big Island via highway

The Mamalahoa Highway spans the entire island, connecting Kealakekua residents to the rest of Hawai’i. Everyday necessities, including the Kona Community Hospital, can be found in town, while big-box stores like Target and Walmart lie just north in Kailua-Kona, about a 20-minute drive away. The Kona International Airport is also on the island's northern end, meaning residents are about 35 minutes from catching their next flight.
