A small town all about local art

Though home to less than 2,500 residents, Kechi is a truly unique city just north of Wichita with a thriving Arts and Business District. Part of that is thanks to Cindy Wolf and her husband, Richard, who developed a strip of land to welcome art-inspired businesses, along with their own shops – Cindy’s Quilts-n-More and Richard’s Wood Shop. “When my husband and I moved here in ’85, Kechi was known as the antique capital because we had so many antique stores,” says Wolf, “But people started retiring and aging out of it. Then we brought in the arts district, so that’s what we’re trying to promote now – mom and pop shops that are artist related.” With more than a dozen businesses in the district, locals can enjoy glass-blowing classes, shopping for vintage items, watching local theater productions and much more. Kechi is also loved by residents for its local park and the one annual event that has the community cheering on racing turtles.

Kechi's Arts and Business District

Along Oliver and Kechi Road is the Arts and Business District, where the town’s creative culture shines. Karg Art Glass offers beautiful blown glass artwork, mosaics and pottery, all made by more than 100 local artists. Those who want to learn can take a glass-blowing class. Attached to Wolf’s building behind Karge Art Glass is her quilt shop and her husband’s wood shop, along with The Vintage Rhinestone, where shoppers can search for antique home décor. Across the street, Kechi Playhouse, located in a restored century-old church, has been putting on plays since 1983. “They do a different play each month,” says Wolf. “It’s a small theater, so if you have eight to 10 people performing in there, that’s a big show. Sometimes, they even have two people in the play.” There are also a few local restaurants at this intersection. Geno’s Bar-B-Q, open Fridays and Saturdays, is tucked inside a bungalow-style house. Old School Taphouse & Social, fittingly housed in a portable classroom building, serves various Kansas-brewed beers. For groceries, Leeker’s Family Food is about 3 miles away in Park City. There is also a Dillons 4 miles away on North Woodlawn Boulevard.

Low inventory housing market

Most homes in Kechi have different variations of New Traditional architecture and were built within the last five years. These homes can feature small front porches, spacious three-car garages and four to five bedrooms, ranging from $350,000 to $450,000. There are also more modest ranch-style homes and bi-levels built throughout the 1990s on quarter-acre lots selling for $150,000 to $250,000. With less than 850 homes, inventory is limited, and homes don’t hit the market often.

Kechi Park is the city’s one green space, offering a walking path surrounding a fishing pond stocked with largemouth bass and crappie. Kids can also enjoy playing on the playground set up on a sandy terrain. Less than 7 miles from the city is the 600-acre Northeast Sedgwick County Park, with miles of grassy and forested trails. Equestrians will especially love this green space, as there are trails meant explicitly for horses.
