The neighborhood has an atmosphere of being far removed from any commercial areas, but residents can reach the supermarkets and restaurants of Tehachapi in less than 20 minutes. “It’s a beautiful area with rolling hills and the homes are very spread out,” says Tina Price, a Bakersfield-area real estate agent with Keller Williams. “It’s a very small, country community.”

Many feature fenced-in acres to house livestock or horses. “Even though you’re not too far from Bakersfield, the weather is pretty different,” Price says. “You get all four seasons and some snow in the winter compared to Bakersfield’s hot and dry climate.” The area’s homes were largely built between the 1950s and early 2000s, with some newer builds scattered throughout. The market also has land for sale ranging from $60,000 to $350,000, depending on acreage. Single-story homes on smaller lots near the center of town range from $240,000 to $450,000, while expansive hillside homes can go for around $600,000 to $1.2 million. Keene has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

Most Keene students attend Tompkins Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. Jacobsen Middle School receives a C-plus. Keene has a small handful of non-residential buildings along Woodford-Tehachapi Road, including a post office, a fire station and the Keene Cafe. The quaint diner has been around for over a century and serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week, from pancakes and biscuits and gravy to burgers and burritos. Around 10 miles southeast, Tehachapi has a wider selection of businesses, with local favorites including the Village Grill Family Restaurant and Red House BBQ. Tehachapi Boulevard serves as the town’s main business corridor, with storefronts ranging from clothing boutiques and bars to a coffee shop and an art center. Nearby options for groceries include Walmart and Albertsons.

A central location for natural areas and national parks

There are a handful of protected natural areas surrounding the Keene community, including the Panofsky-Wilson Preserve and the Frank and Joan Randall Preserve. The Golden Hills Nature Park, where visitors can walk the mile loop trail around Tom Sawyer Lake. The Tehachapi Mountain Trails Association maintains over 15 miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails that can be accessed from Burnett Road. Keene is also within 200 miles of Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Death Valley national parks.

Kern Transit and CA-58

Kern Transit operates the bus routes across Kern County, with Route 100 spanning from Bakersfield to Lancaster, with a stop outside of the Keene Cafe. California state Route 58 runs through the community and can take drivers around 30 miles northwest to Downtown Bakersfield or roughly 100 miles east to Barstow. Los Angeles is about 125 miles south.
