Lakeside communities in a small town
A small town of less than 1,500, Keystone Heights is a commuter city for workers in Gainesville and Jacksonville with a tightknit community. “People come here who want to know their neighbors and find smaller schools for their kids,” says Steven Milligan, a Realtor with CW Realty who has lived in the area for 30 years. Notable for its many lakes, Keystone Heights residents play an active role in nature preservation. “The city works hard to keep the lakes in good condition so everyone can enjoy them,” Milligan says. Locals say the community is a welcome change of pace from the hurried lifestyle in adjacent cities; residents are 25 miles from Gainesville and 56 miles from Jacksonville.

Ranch-style homes by the lakeside
Find single-family homes in Keystone Heights; Craftsman-and ranch-style houses range from $200,000 to $300,000 for late 20th-century models and $300,000 to $400,000 for newer construction from the 2000s. Acre lots, short driveways and leafy lawns with tall oak trees are common features. Near Gatorbone Lake, find secluded, waterfront ranch-style homes among oak trees draped in Spanish Moss starting at $275,000. “For now, Keystone Heights is more affordable than Gainesville and Jacksonville, but the secret’s out so we’ll see how long that lasts,” Milligan says.

Mom and pop restaurants in downtown
At Keystone Village Square, grab groceries at Hitchcock’s Markets. Laredo Mexican restaurant offers authentic Latin American cuisine like carne asada and huevos rancheros. Follow Green Way to Brooklyn Boys, where patrons can order a slice of pizza and see what’s on tap at their Long Island Beach Bar; next door, Stone’s Irish Pub offers happy hour food like burgers and wraps. “In Keystone Heights, it’s mostly mom and pop restaurants with a small town feel,” Milligan says.
Downtown Gainesville is about 25 miles away for more dining options like Flaco’s Cuban Bakery for empanadas, or Alpin Bistro, a casual French restaurant with tapas and a wine menu. Stop in Loosey’s Downtown on West University Avenue for live music, trivia nights and holiday parties.
Golfers can enjoy the tee time at the Keystone Golf Club.
Boating, fishing and wildlife in Keystone Heights
Milligan says Lake Santa Fe is the most popular lake in Keystone Heights; here, locals take their boats out and fish for largemouth bass, black crappie and bluegill. Head to Keystone Beach on Lake Geneva for a day in the sand; nearby, the Geneva Jungle is a 5,200-square-foot playground built by volunteers in the community.
At Mike Roess Gold Head State Park, visitors can enjoy over 3 miles of paved bike paths, 73 campsites for tents or trailers and nature trails through pine forests among wild turkeys, bobwhite quail and American kestrels. Little Rain Lake Park provides sporting facilities like batting cages, a basketball court and playing fields. Two miles from downtown, Keystone Golf and Country Club is a 9-hole course with annual golf tournaments. Thirteen miles away, the Santa Fe Swamp Conservation Area covers over 7,000 acres of swamp land and wildlife includes white-tailed deer, hogs and eastern cottontail rabbits.

The Florida Museum of Natural History features exhibits like the Butterfly Rainforest and Florida Fossils. Downtown Jacksonville is 56 miles away, but it’s worth the drive to catch a Jaguars game at EverBank Stadium. There’s also a passionate music scene here, and annual jazz and blues festivals showcase local talent and other musicians from around the country.
