Kimball's location along the Tennessee River Valley and Cumberland Plateau
As the Tennessee River Valley cuts through the Cumberland Plateau, a series of valleys and ridges connects the low-lying riverfront to the towering plateau. About 30 miles west of Chattanooga, the small town of Kimball includes a small downtown along the valley floor, plus a gated community atop the plateau. The area attracts residents with easy access to Interstate 24 and a wider array of housing styles and price points compared to the larger adjacent communities of South Pittsburg and Jasper.
Traditional homes downtown and mountain estates in Jasper Highlands
Homebuyers in Kimball choose between its small downtown area and a rural gated community. “Jasper Highlands is one of the premier gated communities in the area here,” says Jessica Wright, a Realtor with Re/Max Realty South who specializes in Marion County, Tennessee. “It’s really increased the growth of the area. There are only 500 homes there that are built and lived in, but it’s just a third of the way built out.” Homes in this area start from the mid-$600,000s to nearly $1 million, while large estates with mountain vistas can go from $1 million to almost $4 million, based on size and amenities. Downtown, homes from the middle of the 20th century line the narrow roads off Main Street, often in ranch or traditional style, typically selling from the upper $100,000s to the mid-$400,000s. Newer builds can go from around $500,000 to the mid-$600,000s. Land is also for sale within Jasper Highlands, generally selling for $100,000 per acre.
Mountain and river access for recreation
Kimball has access to both the mountains and the river. South Pittsburg Municipal Park, about 3 miles away, has a public boat landing on the Tennessee River, while the Franklin State Forest and the Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lee Carter Natural Area are each about 20 miles. Each park has trails for hiking, and the Carter Natural Area has caves for visitors to explore in the summer months. “A lot of people come to the area for the hikes and the waterfalls, and the rock climbers,” Wright says. Closer to town, Kimball Park has a basketball court, baseball diamonds and lighted soccer fields. Inside the Jasper Highlands gated community, residents can play tennis and pickleball on the courts or take a dip in the pool.
Kimball Crossing is the town's epicenter for shopping
Downtown Kimball offers plenty of shopping and dining, especially near the intersection of Highway 72 and Interstate 24. Its focal point is Kimball Crossing, an outdoor mall with shops like Walmart and Dollar Tree and fast-food restaurants. Food City sits just down the street for groceries. Top of the Rock Restaurant and Brewery is located along a ridge in the Jasper Highlands development, overlooking the Tennessee River.
Time change and travel to Chattanooga
I-24, the main route in the area, cuts through downtown. The largest city in the area, Chattanooga, is roughly 25 miles away. Notably, Chattanooga is an hour ahead of Kimball, since the borderline for Eastern and Central time zones runs between the two. “We’re two hours from Nashville and two hours from Atlanta,” Wright says. “You can get anywhere from here.” While residents generally own cars, they can schedule bus pickups and drop-offs from the Southeast Tennessee Human Resource Agency.
Education at Marion County schools
Students in Kimball can attend the Marion County School District. Some students can attend South Pittsburg Elementary, which receives a B-minus from Niche, and B-rated South Pittsburg High for seventh through 12th grade. However, most of the community is zoned to C-rated Jasper Elementary, C-plus Jasper Middle and B-minus Marion County High. The high school offers several career-focused courses, including subjects like agriculture, health science and engineering. Chattanooga State Community College also has a campus within Kimball.
Events at the Pink Cottage on Main and in Jasper Highlands
Downtown Kimball is a spot for community gatherings, including at the Pink Cottage on Main, a venue that hosts food truck nights and crocheting lessons for kids and adults alike. The Jasper Highlands development has its own events, which includes holiday celebrations like a Fourth of July parade.
