King's Beach, a lakefront community

Time seems to stand still in the funky little beach town of Kings Beach. Located at the center of Lake Tahoe's North Shore, Kings Beach's main road is dotted with old-timey cottage motels, local restaurants and little shops. Locals can spy a good look at Lake Tahoe from almost anywhere in Kings Beach. The lake is a major draw for residents to settle in the area, but for many, the easy access to golf is an added bonus. Kings Beach is also home to the only natural hot spring in the Lake Tahoe region.

Homes on and off the lake

Like surrounding neighborhoods, Kings Beach's landscape feels like living in a mountainous forest, with its dense population of tall pine trees, steep roadways, and views of Lake Tahoe from almost anywhere. Kings Beach home prices can range from $500,000 for townhomes to nearly $8 million for lakeside properties. If residents are lucky, they can snag a property right on the lake. These properties are grandstanding estates, many with floor-to-ceiling windows, offering panoramic views of Lake Tahoe. For homes more inland, cross over North Lake Boulevard and take notice of the street names. The streets feature names of different types of trout and animals commonly found in forests like beavers, bears, wolves and deer. These homes mainly look like log cabins with wood paneling wrapping their exteriors. There's also A-frame mountain homes and small cottages. Further up north in Kings Beach is a townhome community.

Skiing, golf and activities on the lake

In the summer, locals can enjoy swimming in the cool, crystal-clear waters of Lake Tahoe at Kings Beach State Park. In the winter months, snow activities are all the rage. While Kings Beach doesn't have the steep mountain slopes like its neighbors, locals can still go cross-country skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing. Golf enthusiasts can hit the links at the Historic Old Brockway Golf Course. A family-owned and operated 9-hole course, Old Brockway offers the longest golf season in the region. Kings Beach is also home to the Historic Stateline Fire Lookout. Built in 1936, this historic landmark was one of the first fire lookouts in Lake Tahoe. While the fire tower is long gone, locals can still hike to the top of the lookout and enjoy the fantastic views.

The Char Pit is an iconic, no-frills hole-in-the-wall joint where locals can enjoy burgers, ice cream and onion rings. The Burrito Window has a simple menu consisting of burritos, tacos, chopped salad, tostadas and kid's food. Locals say it's an excellent spot for a quick lunch. Neighborhood businesses include Jai Yen, a shop that sells trinkets from Thailand and Laos and Jackpot Vintage Second Hand Score. Residents can grab groceries at the Tahoe Central Market, a locally owned shop and deli or at La Mexicana Meat Market & Taqueria, an all-in-one meat market, grocery store, bakery and restaurant.
