A rural hamlet close to Kingston
Ruby is a small rural hamlet on the outskirts of Kingston. Quiet winding roads feature a mix of modest home styles, while the metro area's central shopping corridor is just 6 miles away along U.S. Route 9W. "Kingston is what I consider the hub of Ulster County," says Greg Berardi, principal broker at Berardi Realty, who has 20 years of experience in the industry. "It's right in the center of the Hudson Valley, and you're 10 to 15 minutes from everything. Nearby hamlets can be extremely rural but close to shops and restaurants." Ruby is in a unique location that borders miles of woodlands and offers a secluded country lifestyle while still being nearly equidistant from some of the Hudson Valley's most popular communities, including Woodstock, Saugerties, and Kingston. A low CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4, comparatively affordable homes and proximity to entertainment attracts first-time homebuyers on a budget and anyone looking for a slow-paced lifestyle minutes from amenities.
Outdoor recreation in nature preserves like Bluestone Wild Forest
Tucked away in the foothills of the Catskills, Ruby is close to miles of hiking trails that weave through woodlands. It borders the Highwoods Multiple Use Area, a popular wooded area for seasonal hunting of turkey, deer and bear. Although no officially marked trails or campsites exist, Highwoods still attracts hikers looking for off-the-beaten-track trails and primitive camping.
About 5 miles south, Bluestone Wild Forest is a remote nature preserve spanning 3,000 acres. Its rugged trails attract hikers and mountain bikers, while a freshwater lake draws anglers. Bluestone is also home to the Sawkill Family Ski Center for downhill and cross-country skiing throughout the winter.
Thorn Preserve is another protected area about 7 miles away where 60 acres of open meadows feature mowed walking paths and blooming wildflowers that add a pop of color throughout the year. Members flock to the Zena Recreation Park Swim and Tennis Club down the street from the preserve during the summer. An 8-mile drive east from the heart of Ruby to Ulster Landing County Park has a small sand beach along the Hudson River's banks that welcomes sunbathers and swimmers. Other amenities include grills, picnic tables, a playground and hiking trails.
About 10 miles from Ruby, the Ashokan Rail Trail offers 11.5 miles of rocky trails that loop around the sparking Ashokan reservoir. "It was originally created in the early 1900s to provide clean drinking water to New York City residents," says Alex Stier, associate broker with Keller Williams Realty, Hudson Valley North, who has nearly 30 years of experience in the industry. "Multiple hamlets were flooded or relocated during the creation of the reservoir. People still joke that they can sell the tops of old buildings in the water."

Bi-level and ranch-style homes
This small hamlet comprises two main subdivisions that feature a mix of 20th-century cottages, bi-level and ranch-style homes that range from the mid-$100,000s to the high $300,000s. Most properties sit on spacious lots that average around half an acre and offer privacy but are close enough to wave to passing neighbors. Attached garages are standard, while others showcase detached garages with matching color schemes and extra storage sheds. Other streets give way to the occasional Colonial Revival, Dutch colonials that pay homage to region’s past or an early 19th century stone house hidden beyond the tree line. Cape Cod-style farmhouses with dormer windows are scattered in between. Prices for these properties can range from the mid $500,000s to the low $700,000s, but they are less common than the typical ranch-style house. Homebuyers should note that the area’s winding country roads are prone to flooding due to their proximity to waterways like Plattekill Creek.
While there are many very old homes in Ruby there are also streets with newer split-level house.

Events in nearby Woodstock, Saugerties and Kingston
Ruby is just a short drive from Woodstock, Saugerties and Kingston and their jam-packed event calendars. In Saugerties, a clever marketing ploy to promote local farmers has transformed into one the Valley's largest events: the annual Hudson Valley Garlic Festival. Every year, thousands of garlic lovers gather at the Cantine Memorial Complex to enjoy live music, cooking demonstrations and vendor stalls selling garlic-infused goodies. Stier notes that every food item must include garlic.
In Woodstock, the iconic Bearsville Theater features weekly concerts and events throughout the year that range from country music festivals to fall harvest celebrations. The theater played a significant role in the music of the 1960s, with famous artists like Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan flocking to town to record at its studio.
Events also take place almost every weekend 9 miles south in Kingston. Local restaurants and bars feature weekly live music, while Rondout's T.R. Gallo Waterfront Park hosts some of the city's largest gatherings. Festivities range from Hooley on the Hudson, where three stages of live music and Irish step-dancing performances attract crowds of attendees decked out in green, to the Italian Festival's mouthwatering food stalls.
