Neighborhood with personality near downtown Knoxville
Located just three miles north of downtown, North Knoxville residents enjoy being close to the city's theaters and museums, college football games and upscale dining scene, yet this neighborhood maintains a personality of its own. Residents will find venues for shopping, dining, browsing and creating art, attending a live music show or watching a first-run film. Knoxville continues to invest in the neighborhood, improving pedestrian accessibility along North Central Street in 2019. In 2023, the neighborhood city unveiled a $70 million Public Safety Complex housing the police and fire departments.
Locals explore over a dozen nearby breweries as part of the Knoxville Ale Trail. Stephen Apking owns Hexagon Brewing Company, a North Knoxville establishment since 2017 and the northernmost brewery on the trail. The booming beer scene is just one perk of living in North Knoxville. "I'm an avid cyclist," Apking says, "so I can ride right out of the brewery and go to Sharp's Ridge," a 157-acre park with hiking and biking paths. One of Knoxville's biggest draws is Great Smoky Mountains National Park, just 38 miles south of the neighborhood.
Updated craftsman homes with traditional features
Single-family homes make up most of the North Knoxville market. Two- and three-bedroom homes are available for between $150,000 and $385,000. That includes many renovated craftsman homes from the late 19th century through the early 20th century. They maintain traditional features such as earthy colors and intricate detailing on the porch beams and gabled roofs. In some areas, the terrain can be hilly, especially near Sharp's Ridge.

"Because we're centrally located, we do have quite a few restaurants in the area, so that makes it easy for me to get a variety of food," Apking says. Jackie's Dream is a well-regarded local haunt offering southern staples such as fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. Residents find fresh produce and other groceries at Kroger and Three Rivers Market.
Locals experience Knoxville's expanding craft beer scene by stamping their Knoxville Ale Trail Passport at over a dozen nearby breweries, especially along North Central Street. Located just south of the neighborhood, downtown Knoxville has rooftop bars, theaters, museums, art galleries, clothing stores and an upscale dining scene. For big-box shopping, locals will find Target, Home Depot and Walmart on the outskirts of town.

North Knoxville venues foster arts appreciation
Knoxville has been ranked one of the best cities for college football, and North Knoxville residents are right in the thick of it. The University of Tennessee Volunteers play four miles away at Neyland Stadium, the sixth-largest college football venue in the U.S. The city celebrates its rich cultural heritage with several festivals, such as the Hola Festival, the Asian Festival, the Cherokee Heritage Festival and the Kuumba Festival.
The Concourse is a performance venue bringing entertainment to the neighborhood's north side, including EDM, rock, metal and tribute shows. The fun continues at Central Cinema, hosting diverse programs including comedy nights and poetry slams in addition to first-run independent films and feature films. Locals can learn various art styles, including sculpture, dance and painting at the Knoxville Arts Center.

Knox County students earn high marks
Knoxville is part of Knox County Schools, which earns an overall B-plus from Niche. Many North Knoxville students are zoned for schools that earn a B-minus, including Christenberry Elementary, Whittle Springs Middle and Fulton High. Fulton High School students may get hands-on work experience in communications, health and human services or public service through different academies.
Christenberry Elementary School serves students from preschool through fifth grade.

City views at Sharp's Ridge Park
Locals are grateful for several city parks scattered throughout the neighborhood.
