Knoxville suburb with style
Situated just outside of downtown Knoxville, the Norwood neighborhood offers residents affordability with classic suburban vibes. “It’s a great area because it’s affordable and it has an actual community feel to it,” says Jarrod Cruze, real estate agent and lifelong resident of Knoxville. “Some suburbs feel very plain, but Norwood has its own distinct vibe.” With a particular emphasis on blending the new with the preexisting historical character of the neighborhood, Norwood is a diverse and welcoming neighborhood with plenty to do—and plenty of room to stretch out.
Old and new in Norwood
Homes in Norwood generally consist of 1970s-era ranch styles and split levels. A recent increase in newer developments and the fact that many older homes in the neighborhood are updated and renovated means that a walk down Norwood is sure to feature a number of unique characteristics to take in, too. Prices range from $265,000 to $325,000. While the neighborhood appeals to more than just families, part of the charm of Norwood is its “familial” nature. “One of the coolest things about the area is that some of the older houses belonged the grandparents and parents of the current residents,” says Cruze. “And that makes it a great melting pot because you have people who have lived there forever mixing with the newer folks.”

Head to Knoxville or stay close
Residents have their choice of heading further into the neighborhood or cruising to downtown Knoxville for an assortment of dining and shopping options. “It’s a really walkable, really active community,” says Cruze. “You can go for a run in the park and then walk over to the breweries to meet up with friends.” Those looking for some classic Mexican American fare will find it at nearby Monterrey Mexican Restaurant, known for its best-in-town cheese dip and margaritas. And just like so much else in the area, the restaurant is owned by a local family that’s been in the area for years. Nearby Powell Shopping District has developed rapidly in recent years, making it a great spot for chain retailers and restaurants too.
Merchant Drive is one of the main thoroughfares through Norwood and has some of the best retail offerings in the neighborhood.

Community shines
Community is a genuine part of life in Norwood, and that extends to the amenities it has to offer. One of the area’s more notable features is the Norwood Heights Swim & Recreation Club, a members-only pool that anyone in Knoxville can become a member of—not just those who live in the neighborhood. After a swim, Norwood residents can walk the tree-lined sidewalks over to Victor Ashe Park. The park is another staple of the area that’s served its residents for generations, and features trails, a dog park, athletic fields, and areas for grilling out.
