Convenient family amenities in northwest Knoxville

Homebuyers looking at Knoxville’s suburban Pleasant Ridge neighborhood have choices in this community, located 6 miles from downtown. Nearby and within the neighborhood are many family-friendly amenities, sports leagues and green spaces. However, local highways allow residents to engage with events and attractions in the greater Knoxville area. There are options for education, too, as those attending public schools can choose to walk or ride, and local private institutions offer an alternative if desired. There are also various housing options, from midcentury homes on larger lots to neatly arranged new construction, providing multiple entry points into this suburban community.

Midcentury homes to new construction in Pleasant Ridge

Pleasant Ridge has a varied architectural landscape with homes from the 1960s and 70s, 1990s and early 2000s and new construction built within the last few years. Older parts of the neighborhood feature mixed-material ranch-style homes, bi-levels and split-levels on grassy, gently sloping plots. Some homes incorporate Colonial Revival stylings such as shutters and columns. Some lots are dotted with trees, which some neighbors fence in for children and pets. Newly constructed New Traditional homes sit closer together on wide, curved streets. “There’s a handful of new-construction neighborhoods where you get postage-stamp lots — that’s the trade-off when you get a new construction home,” says Jerri Bottom, a broker with Realty Executives Associates with 8 years of local real estate experience. These new homes often feature brick and stone elements and steep gables and neatly paved driveways, some with two-car garages. Homes do not last long on the market, selling after an average of 20 days. The national average is 44 days. Prices range between $220,000 for a 1950s ranch-style home, up to $580,000 for a newly built three- or four-bedroom home.

Pleasant Ridge Elementary hosts events and summer camps

Children here can start at Pleasant Ridge Elementary School, centrally located in the neighborhood. The school hosts a wide range of dress-up days and events such as career day and a spelling bee. In the summer, teachers offer programs such as a ukelele summer camp. The school has a B-minus from Niche. C-plus-rated Northwest Middle is also within the neighborhood and sits next door to the American Youth Soccer Organization Region 124’s fields. Karns High gets a B-minus.
Local private options include the A-rated River’s Edge Christian Academy. Knox County operates the nearby Ridgedale School, which provides special education programs and trauma-informed education for students who have been suspended from their home school.

Pets and kids can play at Victor Ashe Park

Victor Ashe Park is a sprawling community meeting space with opportunities for play and relaxation. The 125-acre park includes a disc golf course, a playground, a sand volleyball court and walking and cycling paths that curve around a lake. Dogwood Park, a fenced-in area for pets, is also here. Tristar Park-Badgett Field is home to a range of youth sports and coed adult leagues including volleyball, softball and cornhole.
Northwest Skate Park is next to the middle school. A mix of street obstacles and transition features sit atop former basketball and tennis courts. Knoxville Parks and Recreation also operates the Cumberland Estates Community Center, one of the largest of its kind in the city. People can take advantage of the center’s gym and weight room, dance studio and meeting and game rooms. The center sits on 26 wooded acres, home to a playground and nature trails.

Golfing is available at Knoxville Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole course with day passes and annual memberships. For indoor recreation, Strike & Spare has open bowling and various leagues. Onsight Rock Gym offers climbing instruction to kids and adults.

Crown Pointe Plaza a fully equipped shopping center

Crown Pointe Plaza shopping center sits on the neighborhood’s north end along the Clinton Highway. “You’ve got a lot of things like Lowes, Target, Home Depot, and any restaurant you can ask for,” Bottom says. “There are constantly new little fast-food places coming up around it.” Here, big-box stores neighbor chain eateries such as Taziki’s Mediterranean Café, McAlister’s Deli sandwich shop and the locally owned Ichiban Japanese Grill Restaurant serving hibachi dishes and sushi. Western Avenue also has a commercial corridor of shops, entertainment and restaurants. People can stock up on essentials at Walmart Neighborhood Market, hit the Planet Fitness at Cumberland Estates Center or sit down for a margarita and fajitas at La Fiesta Mexican Restaurant

A 6-mile drive to downtown Knoxville

Pleasant Ridge is very convenient to the interstate and downtown Knoxville,” Bottom says. “You can be in downtown Knoxville in 15 minutes, and you have easy access to I-640 and 40.” Pleasant Ridge Greenway, Western Avenue and Clinton Highway are major thoroughfares here. Commuters can use them to reach local interstates 275, 640 and 40, which leads to Nashville. Downtown Knoxville is about a 6-mile drive, as is the University of Tennessee. Most people here drive, though there are bus stops available along Clinton Highway and Western Avenue. Clinton Highway also has bike lanes.

Year-round events at Knoxville Expo Center

Knoxville Expo Center, about 1.5 miles away, schedules diverse, seasonal events such as the Christmas Fair and the Summer Market. Each January, the Cabin Fever Car Show features more than 200 antique cars and motorcycles. The center also hosts several children’s consignment events throughout the year, an opportunity for families to purchase and sell discounted clothes, toys and equipment as their children grow.
