Suburban peninsula on the Tennessee River
Sequoyah Hills, known to be one of Knoxville’s first suburbs, is a nature-filled peninsula that sits along the Tennessee River. This mostly residential neighborhood is named after the Cherokee scholar Sequoyah, as this land was originally inhabited by Native Americans and is still home to a centuries-old Cherokee burial mound, which is indicated by a Sequoyah Hills Preservation Society memorial plaque. “Sequoyah Hills is one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Knoxville… there’s a lot of history here, lots of older homes with character and charm,” says Realtor Michelle Corley with Keller Williams Signature Real Estate, who has more than seven years of real estate experience. The main road in this neighborhood, Scenic Drive, is a distinct corridor featuring stately residences, some of which date back to the 19th century.

Single-family homes featuring Georgian-style architecture
Driving down the streets of Sequoyah Hills, residents can find a number of single-family Georgian-style homes and Colonial Revival properties that often feature brick exteriors and classic, symmetrical compositions. A number of traditional ranch-style homes and Cape Cod dwellings dot the neighborhood, as well; and although this area is dominated by single-family homes, locals can still find several apartment buildings and condo complexes here, including Kenwood Apartments and Hamilton House Condominiums. The median cost of a home here is just under $750,000, with prices that tend to range between $650,000 and $1.5 million.

Walk along the river at Sequoyah Hills Park
Sequoyah Hills Park sits along the Tennessee River’s edge and offers a number of recreational amenities for residents. “It’s one of the largest parks in the area; there are ballfields, playgrounds and water access since it borders the river,” Corley says. Sharon Bailey, one of the top residential real estate brokers in the Knoxville region, adds that residents “love to walk out their door for a stroll along the riverside nature trail, which stretches more than 5 miles round trip.” This neighborhood is also home to Whitlow-Logan Park, where locals can practice their serve on tennis courts or enjoy an evening picnic. Additional amenities at Whitlow-Logan include a playground and basketball court.

“This neighborhood is in the heart of West Knoxville, and residents are only minutes away from tons of restaurants and shopping centers, as well as Downtown Knoxville,” Bailey says. She also adds that Sequoyah Hills itself has a small commercial center where residents can browse literature at Bear Den Books or grab a caffeinated drink from Treetop Coffee Shop. Also in this neighborhood commercial center is The Plaid Apron, a locally owned restaurant that offers American breakfasts, lunches and Saturday brunch in a cozy café setting. Residents can shop for groceries and organic products at grocery stores like Fresh Market, Aldi and Kroger, which are located just north of the neighborhood along Kingston Pike.
