Quiet, coastal, connected
One of the oldest of La Jolla’s 16 neighborhoods, Muirlands is set about 10 miles north of downtown San Diego among the slopes of Mount Soledad. Surrounded by coastal hills, beaches and dramatic bluffs, the neighborhood is named for Harold James Muir (a common misconception is that it’s named for renowned naturalist, John Muir) who purchased over 250 acres of Soledad Mountain with plans to build Muirlands in 1926. Today, the neighborhood offers a relaxed atmosphere in a prime location that makes it easy to explore the rest of San Diego via Interstate 5, a suitable choice for those seeking a quiet and safe yet connected upscale beachside neighborhood. “You get a lot of people who moved from other parts of La Jolla looking for the quintessential coastal life, and Muirland is usually where they find their forever home,” says Justin Flisher, real estate agent with 1st Class Real Estate San Diego. “For that reason, it’s an older community with homes and homeowners that have been here for generations.”
Elegant ocean vistas
Homes in Muirlands are set on a lush palm-lined landscape, offering views of the surrounding fairways and coast. Many homes boast their own gates and driveways, set on winding roads that offer a sense of seclusion from the rest of La Jolla. The neighborhood offers oppulent custom-built mansions perched on hillsides, priced over $20 million. Many homes are Spanish and Mediterranean-Revival or stylish contemporary-style stucco homes. The most comparatively affordable options can be found on the flatlands; renovated mid-century ranch-style builds that go for around $2.5 to $3 million.
Nearby schools earn A’s across the board
Public schools in the neighborhood are zoned within the A-rated San Diego Unified district. Students can start out La Jolla Elementary, move up to Muirlands Middle and finish off at the comprehensive La Jolla High, all earning A’s. La Jolla High students can join extracurriculars like Hip Hop, Foreign film and Improv or join a virtual summer cultural exchange program.
Exclusive golfing and coastal parks
Windansea Beach is popular with surfers for its rocky shore and surf breaks. Nearby, kids play on the soccer, baseball fields and playground at Bird Rock Park near Bird Rock Elementary. La Jolla Hermosa Park on Chelsea Avenue provides coastal views, while Calumet Park features open green space atop bluffs where residents often hang out to watch the sunset. La Jolla Country Club is a private resort-style oasis for golfers. Membership isn’t based on proximity, but rather through sponsorship by current members. There’s an initiation fee for this exclusive club that offers full golf amenities and invitational events, as well as wine tastings, a book club and a casual restaurant.
Beachside shopping and dining
Muirlands residents are just a 2-mile drive (or even a 2-mile walk depending what part of the neighborhood they’re in) from beachside shopping at La Plaza La Jolla. For dinner, Georges at the Cove features an open-air terrace with waterfront views, serving fresh seafood, beef and pasta dishes crafted by renowned chef Trey Foshee's team. Residents can find high-quality, fair-trade brews at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, known for their single-origin and organic farm-to-cup coffee. For grocery shopping, both Vons and Trader Joe's are conveniently located on Garnet Avenue, while Gelson’s Pacific Beach is about 3 miles away on Turquoise Avenue.
Scenic sanctuary on the summit
Perched atop Mount Soledad since 1959, All Hallows Catholic Church on La Jolla Scenic Drive is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture that’s often used as a wedding venue. Part of the All Hallows Parish, the church is adorned with vibrant stained-glass windows and surrounded by lush greenery.
30 minutes to downtown San Diego (depending on traffic)
Commuters can take the major north-south route Interstate 5 to get to downtown San Diego and the airport in 10 miles. The closest hospital is Scripps Memorial, located just off I-5 on Genesee Avenue. The number 30 MTS (San Diego Metropolitan System) bus connects downtown San Diego with Muirlands.
Low overall crime risk
In terms of crime risk, Muirlands holds a 2 out of 10 overall CAP Index score, which is deemed a low crime area in comparison to the national average of 4 out of 10.
