The Village
Condos overlooking the ocean
The Village’s busy, palm-lined commercial boulevards break off into quiet residential pockets throughout the neighborhood. Residents can usually be seen out walking, biking or jogging along the clean, smooth sidewalks to the nearby beaches. Single-family homes here are either 1970s midcentury modern, renovated 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival-style with terracotta-tiled roofs, or 1940s Cape Cod-style with brick siding; most have three to five bedrooms, and pricing is largely determined by proximity to the coast and square footage. Single-family homes set inland with layouts of 2,000 to 3,000 square feet tend to range from $2.5 to $4 million, while seaside homes with layouts of 3,000 to 5,000 square feet tend to range from $4.5 to $6 million. Northwest and along the coast, 21st-century luxury condos are found in complexes and high-rise buildings; two- and three-bedroom units range from $2.5 to $3 million, and four-bedroom units go for around $4 to $4.5 million.Historic Bishop’s School
Local kids can start school at La Jolla Elementary, then move on to Muirlands Middle School; both earn an A from Niche. La Jolla High School also serves The Village and earns an overall A-plus. The Village is home to the prestigious Bishop’s School, founded in 1909 by Ellen Browning Scripps. Clark says, “It’s so well-respected that I’ve found Village homes for residents specifically because they’re interested in attending Bishop’s.” Eighty-five percent of Bishop’s students are also athletes on its championship-winning teams.Seaside parks and small beaches
Set along the shoreline of La Jolla Cove, Ellen Browning Scripps Park is an open, grassy field that’s often used as a seaside wedding venue. At Children’s Pool, residents can splash in the shallow water or snorkel near kelp beds, looking out for sea turtles. Boomer Beach is relatively hidden from public view, tucked south of La Jolla Cove, and the gloriously landscaped Wedding Bowl is found in Cuvier Park. La Jolla Community Park includes tennis courts and The La Jolla Recreation Center, where residents can join a year-round calendar of sports training, day camps, fitness classes and youth theater.Coffee, pampering and galleries along Prospect Street and Girard Avenue
The Village's main commercial thoroughfares, Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, are full of shopping promenades, independently owned boutiques and restaurants. The open-air La Plaza La Jolla shopping center on Girard Avenue is ideal for a self-care day, featuring One 10 Salon, Blushtan and Browboss; after a day of pampering, locals can head to the top of the plaza for an Italian meal at Catania. Also on Girard, Harry's Coffee Shop is an old-school, Brooklyn-inspired diner that’s been serving all-day breakfast and classic American dishes since 1960; today, Harry’s is a local staple known for their cozy, casual setting, fresh coffee and cinnamon rolls. Better Buzz Coffee on Prospect Street has a more modern vibe, its open-air setting decked in pink, blue and wood décor; folks head here for matcha lattes and cold brew coffee paired with avocado toast or an acai bowl. There are more than 30 different art galleries in The Village, many set along Prospect Street in what's locally known as “Gallery Row.” Legends Gallery carries prints, sculptures and sketches created by Dr. Seuss, while LIK Fine Art showcases nature and landscape photography by Peter Lik. On First Friday Art Walks, residents can stroll through 26 different galleries to browse through the works of both new and established artists. Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is also set on Prospect Street, where art enthusiasts can tour exhibits and attend programs at the beachfront.
Blue line leads to Downtown San Diego
Torrey Pines Road runs north-east through the neighborhood's eastern portion, and connects 1 mile east with La Jolla Parkway, which leads 3 miles south to Interstate 5. The Village is lined with sidewalks and bike lanes, and the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) bus stops within the neighborhood. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla is about 5 miles north, and the San Diego International Airport is about 10 miles south.Wildfire mitigation
According to a FEMA assessment in spring 2023, San Diego County was identified as having the second-highest wildfire risk among California counties; however, FEMA assessed La Jolla itself as a low-moderate risk area. The closest fire station to The Village is San Diego Fire Department Station 16, about 3 miles east.
