Oasis is a small farming community with tons of outdoors amenities
Oasis is an agricultural community southeast of La Quinta and a few miles north of the Salton Sea. The area was first developed for agriculture in the early 20th century, following the connection of irrigation channels from the Colorado River. Farming still drives the local economy. Year-round vegetable crops — lettuce, broccoli and carrots — thrive under flood irrigation or drip lines, and date palms near Oasis Date Gardens offer a hallmark desert product. "Most of the people in the area are either there for the farms or because they want a bit of open space," says Realtor and area native Norman Williams of Compass Real Estate. "In a lot of ways, it's the exact opposite of what you find closer to Palm Springs, which is a draw for some people. You have to be OK with driving 20 or 30 minutes for shopping and groceries, though."

Ranch-style homes and Spanish-style architecture
Oasis' housing stock is typical of a Coachella Valley farming community: single-story ranch houses, often with auxiliary mobile units for extended family or seasonal laborers. Many homes here date from the 1950s and '60s. Spanish-style and adobe designs are both common, as are larger lots that frequently offer half an acre or more. Most homes in Oasis sell for $400,000 to $700,000, though properties on larger lots can go for considerably more.

Right next to the Santa Rosa Mountains
Traditional recreational amenities in Oasis are limited — the nearest city park is at the Mecca Community Center, 6 miles northeast. However, the area is littered with opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and off-roading. "People love going out into the mountains and desert on their ATVs and side-by-sides," says Williams. "Once you get away from the farms, it's just miles and miles of trails." The Santa Rosa Mountains to the west of Oasis offer excellent views of the valley. Next to the mountains, the hyper-exclusive 18-hole Ladera Golf Club offers a more manicured outdoor experience.

Chapala Market is the heart of the local retail scene
Retail options in Oasis are sparse, but locals can pick up groceries at Chapala Market on the north side of the community. The nearby community of Mecca also has a few small shops and restaurants. There are a number of highly rated Mexican eateries scattered around the area. For all other shopping and dining needs, locals generally head north to Coachella, about 10 miles to the north.

Route 86 connects to Interstate 10
Harrison Street and 66th Avenue are the main thoroughfares in the area. They both connect to state Route 86, which in turn runs north to Coachella and Interstate 10. The area is served by the Oasis 9 bus route, which is operated by the county's Sunline Transit Agency and connects to Coachella. There are very limited flights out of nearby Cochran Regional Airport, and locals generally find it easier to fly out of Palm Springs International Airport, which is a little over 30 miles north of Oasis.
