From steel manufacturing to a busy residential community in South Buffalo

Now a busy residential South Buffalo community in proximity to schools, parks and a load of local eateries, Lackawanna was once a prominent region for steel manufacturing in the 20th century. In fact, the town's existence was made possible in no small part to the Lackawanna Steel Company, which still stands as a historical landmark on the community's southside. "Lackawanna is really representative of the totality of Western New York. You've got these first and second outer ring suburbs that primarily were lower income that, over the last eight to 10 years, have really flourished," says local Real Estate Broker Kenneth Smith of Buffalo First Realty Group, who lives in Buffalo and has over a decade of real estate experience. "It's a good, working-class community that has a decent police force and safety presence."

Architectural variety from Colonials to American Foursquares

Lackawanna's loosely gridded streets feature a wide selection of older homes — some of which were constructed well over a century ago. Colonials and Craftsman-style homes are common in Lackawanna, though American Foursquares and ranch homes with hipped roofs are also present. A smaller, older home can price from $100,000 to $200,000 while newer properties with five bedrooms can top out around $300,000. The housing market in Lackawanna is relatively competitive with many homes selling within three to four weeks of their initial listing. "It's one of the last remaining Buffalo communities that truly is affordable," Smith says. "Ken-Ton, Amherst, Williamsville — those areas are extremely hard to get into. Lots of people look at Lackawanna and see what the real estate is priced at, and it's a no-brainer for them."

Multiple parks offer different recreation opportunities

After school, kids often head to Veterans Stadium off South Park Avenue to play sports on the open field while locals visit Ralph J. Galanti Park to enjoy its green space and walking trail along Smoke Creek. A quick drive northeast is the bustling Cazenovia Park, which contains a playground and multiple sports fields and serves as the site for the weekly South Buffalo Farmers Market, which operates every Sunday from June to September. The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is also nearby, distinguishable by its 67-foot-tall glass dome sheltering its array of exotic plants from the sun. Residents can also book a weekend tee time at South Park Golf Course, situated on the garden's grounds.
