Countryside living close to downtown Lafayette
The Reliez Valley Area of northeast Lafayette is a product of the area’s historic roots. Before the Spanish-American War, the Reliez Valley was made up of large ranchos, says Mary McCosker of the Lafayette Historical Society. Lafayette’s founders bought up the land in 1847. “It changed from huge pieces of land where cattle were run and became small farms, and then the town grew up around it,” she says. Eventually, tunnels were dug between Alameda County and Contra Costa County, and Route 24 was run through the Caldecott Tunnel. “That opened it up to be more suburban so people could live here and get to work through the tunnel,” McCosker says. “It changed from an agricultural community to a bedroom community. And when the Bay Bridge opened, it became more residential.” The neighborhood still has a pastoral feel, but downtown Lafayette is within a mile or three’s drive, with a lively commercial district on Mount Diablo Boulevard.

Hillside swimming pools and terraced lawns
Neighborhood roads, some one lane, some wider shoot off Reliez Valley Road with no through access. Built into the hillside with terraces and scenic views, many homes have courtyards, swimming pools and landscaped grounds. Old farmhouses mingle amongst mid-century and newer estates, says Soraya Golesorkhi, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker and a top producer in the East Bay. “The lots are larger, and it’s generally a quieter area. There are horse pastures and a few homes with vineyards,” she says. The average home value is $2.4 million, up 15 percent from last year. Generally, homes from 2,000 to 3,000 square feet range from $1.25 million to $2 million. Those from 3,000 to 4,000 square feet go for $2 million to $3 million. And those over 4,000 square feet range from $3 million to $5 million. Homebuyers should know that Reliez Valley has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 our of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.
