Neighborhood in Lafayette, California
Contra Costa County 94549
The starting point for the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail
Nearly 8 miles long, the Lafayette-Moraga Regional Trail starts in Trails and ends in the city of Moraga. Open to pedestrians, cyclists, and equestrians, this paved path follows the old Sacramento Northern Railway corridor, often running beside Las Trampas Creek and largely shaded by tall trees. Along the way, the trail leads past the neighborhood's 1-acre Leigh Creekside Park, where towering oaks shade picnic tables and a drinking fountain for trail trekkers. Some of the best-rated schools in Contra Costa County
Local children may attend Lafayette Elementary and M.H. Stanley Middle, both part of the Lafayette School District and each rated A by Niche. The A-plus-rated Acalanes High is part of the Acalanes Union High School District, which Niche rates an overall A-plus and ranks as the No. 1 school district in Contra Costa County. Acalanes High features more than 60 after-school clubs, an aquatic center with an outdoor pool, and a comprehensive independent study program.Longtime residents lead to low housing inventory in sought-after Trails
Ranch-style homes and Craftsman-style bungalows are common here, most built in the 1940s and '50s. Layouts for both styles range from about 1,000 to 2,500 square feet. New traditional homes from the early 2000s tend to have two stories, four bedrooms and Craftsman-style details like small porches and white-painted trim. These larger homes range from about 2,500 to 4,000 square feet. Ranch-style and new traditional homes are set on lots of a quarter-acre to a half-acre, while bungalows are set on smaller lots of about 6,000 to 8,000 square feet. Most homes have private driveways that lead to attached two-car garages. Near Downtown Lafayette, streets are wide and generally lined with narrow sidewalks and mature oak trees; homes sit on smaller, well-maintained grassy lots. Heading away from town, streets become narrower and more winding, and homes are set on larger, often elevated lots; tree and shrub cover tends to be more lush, offering a greater sense of privacy. Throughout the neighborhood, homes start at about $1 million and range to upward of $3.5 million, depending on square footage, upgrades and lot size. Housing inventory is usually limited, as buyers here tend to put down roots.Close to popular annual events in Downtown Lafayette
Some of Lafayette's most popular events are held downtown. Each September, the Lafayette Art and Wine Festival welcomes roughly 85,000 visitors with live music, kids' activities like inflatable slides, and over 200 art and craft vendors, plus area wine, beer and food trucks. On Fridays in June, downtown's Lafayette Plaza hosts the Rock the Plaza concert series, with free live music.Access to State Route 24, County Connection bus stops and Lafayette’s BART rail station
Just north, California Route 24 runs adjacent to Mount Diablo Boulevard. The 24 leads about 13 miles west to Oakland, and a few miles east to Interstate 680 and Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek Medical Center. Mount Diablo Boulevard is lined with County Connection bus stops, and Lafayette’s Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) rail station is downtown. Oakland International Airport (OAK) is about 20 miles away.Downtown Lafayette restaurants and shops just next door
Downtown Lafayette is adjacent to Trails, with locally owned businesses concentrated along Mount Diablo Boulevard and its side streets. RÊVE Bistro is a chic spot for fine French food, while Sideboard is a cozy cafe with made-from-scratch pastries and comfort food. Round Up Saloon is the local late-night watering hole. Retailers here include Zoonie’s Candy Shop, with gelato and old-fashioned candy and soda, and Harper Greer, a casual womenswear boutique. The family-owned Diablo Foods is a local mainstay for groceries, but there's also Whole Foods Market, Safeway and Trader Joe’s.
