A neighborhood on the shores of its namesake

With its northeastern region entirely occupied by Lake Isabella, the town of the same name in California features a landscape defined by its outdoor amenities and several residential areas scattered throughout its boundaries. The Lake Isabella neighborhood primarily consists of the town to the lake’s south, as well as Keyesville to the west across the Kern River and some campgrounds positioned around the lake’s shores. “It’s one of the numerous smaller towns up there,” says Autumn Mitchell, a Realtor and real estate executive with Tobias Real Estate. Isabella is within the same region as Kernville, Wofford Heights, Squirrel Mountain Valley and other neighborhoods of the valley region.

Ranch homes with mountainous surroundings

Amid the rolling hills and mountains rising from the portions of the Lake Isabella landscape not occupied by water, many ranch homes line its streets. Most of the houses range between $150,000 and $350,000, with some smaller and larger outliers selling for less and more, respectively. Some lake homes will be sold on the higher end, and many of the residences in Lake Isabella offer views of the surrounding Sierra Nevada mountains. Driveway overhangs also feature on some of the constructions in the neighborhood, protecting vehicles from weather, and fencing, bushes, sculpted trees and decorative rocks are among the defining features found on some of the properties there.

Multi-districted schooling

Woodrow W. Wallace Elementary School counts Lake Isabella students among its enrollment, hosting kindergarten through fifth grade and receiving a grade of C on Niche. Within the Kernville Union Elementary School District, students can then move on to Woodrow Wallace Middle School, sharing a namesake with its precursor and also scoring a C with Niche. After eighth grade, the pipeline switches over to the Kern High School District, where North High School is zoned. Ranked in the top 20 high schools in the Bakersfield area, North High serves grades nine through 12 and receives a grade of B from Niche. While attending the school, students can engage in a variety of extracurricular activities including school publications, a dance club, culinary organizations and more.

Outdoor adventures on and off terra firma

Enjoy beautiful sunsets from the shores of Lake Isabella or take to the waves. “Boating depends on the time of year,” Mitchell says. “When it’s really high, it’s safe to boat, but there’s trees at the bottom so there are some hazards. Many people won’t swim there in the summertime because of the algae bloom.” Swimming and boating aren’t the only outdoor activities at the lake, though, as visitors can also go jet-skiing, waterskiing, wind surfing and fishing, and several campgrounds, trails and marinas are located around the borders of the lake for adventures on and off terra firma. For snow enthusiasts, the Alta Sierra Ski Resort is about half an hour northeast of Lake Isabella and is open to skiers, snowboarders and tubers when it snows in the area. Lake Isabella Park itself offers a playground, but is colloquially known as “Tank Park” due to the “Patton” United States Army M48 tank located on its grounds as well as two other installments of military memorabilia.

Beloved restaurant staples near the lake

Head over to Nelda’s Diner, which has served the Lake Isabella community for nearly half a century. “There’s lots of little food places, but the best burger shop I like is Nelda’s,” Mitchell says. “They have the best French fries ever, and they’re the home of more than 100 milkshake flavors. They’re a ma-and-pa place.” Nelda’s is beloved in the area, as is the Old Isabella Coffee Company, which offers cold brews, specialty drinks and more on its expansive menu. Both outlets are located on the same relative block between Lake Isabella Boulevard and Crestview Avenue, while 178 Bar & Grill and Dam Korner are among the other local eateries in the neighborhood. For groceries, head down the boulevard to the Vons in the Kern Valley Plaza, which also features a Rite Aid and Family Dollar.

Multiple highways spanning the valley

Linking Lake Isabella with the sprawling landscapes of California beyond are two primary highways, 155 and 178. Highway 155’s terminus is Lake Isabella, but it reaches up and west, crossing through Kern County, farmland and the San Joaquin Valley. It winds along the lake’s shore before it ends when it merges with 178, which in turn connects the town of Lake Isabella all the way southwest until it reaches Bakersfield. Via that highway, which is split into two segments, travelers can access east and downtown Bakersfield and everything the city has to offer.
