West Largo residents enjoy proximity to the beach and homebuying variety
Clusters of housing developments intermingle with restaurants, businesses and industry along Ulmerton Road and off U.S. Highway 19 in West Largo. Here, residents find a variety of residential options, most of which are priced below Largo's median housing price, in a central location less than 4 miles from St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport and 8 miles from beaches on the Gulf Coast. "You're close to the beach but not in a flood zone," says Barabara Brockwell, Mortgages and Real Estate Analyst at the Brockwell Group in Largo. "Largo isn't historically a beach community, but it really is."
An array of housing developments
West Largo has apartments, mobile homes, single-family homes and townhouses branching off of Ulmerton Road. These discordant groupings of subdivisions and developments offer variety for potential homebuyers; single-family houses typically sell for between $260,000 and $500,000, while townhouses sell for between $235,000 and $300,000. Although each community has different types of homes, most were built between the 1980s and early 2000s. Mobile homes sell for between $10,000 and $150,000, plus a monthly land lease of about $1,300. Brockwell explains that mobile home parks are popular among some homebuyers in the area due to their affordability and relative rarity in Florida's housing market. "Everyone wants a place in Florida, and it's become an expensive place to live comparatively. Land now is too valuable to put a mobile home on it," she says.
Industry and businesses along Ulmerton Road
Ulmerton Road goes through the community and is lined with businesses and restaurants. Dining establishments range from chains like Arby's on the east side of the neighborhood to local spots like Finley's Irish Pub & Eatery on the west side of the neighborhood. There is also a mix of industrial buildings, offices and recreation facilities like Fast 5 Soccer and Sky Zone Trampoline Park on the eastern side of the neighborhood along U.S. Highway 19. Publix Super Market is 2 miles north. Largo Central Park and the city's small downtown area is about 5 miles northwest of the neighborhood and has more establishments on the way. "They're building a new town hall center on West Bay [Drive]. That will have retail, mixed-use underneath it—all kinds of exciting things," Brockwell says. "As the area builds up around it, it becomes such a fun place to have in our community."
Nearby beaches and parks, including Largo Central Park
West Largo is 7 miles east of the Belleair Bridge, which takes locals to several miles of beaches off Florida's western coast. Scenic public beaches like Indian Rocks Beach offer views of the clear blue water on the Gulf of Mexico. Parks close to the neighborhood include Pinebrook Park, a small park with a playground and basketball courts, and the larger Largo Central Park. Located about 5 miles northwest, Largo Central Park has 70 acres of open space with walking trails and a performing arts center.
Students attend Pinellas County Schools
Children living in West Largo typically begin at Walsingham Elementary School before progressing to Fitzgerald Middle School and Pinellas Park High School. All three schools have B grades from Niche. Pinellas Park High School offers nine dual enrollment classes, 20 Advanced Placement courses and several industry certifications in subjects such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.
Close to major cities, hospitals and international airports
U.S. Highway 19 borders the neighborhood on the east and connects drivers north-south through the region. The St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is just 4 miles east, across the highway. Residents can get to downtown Clearwater, 8 miles northwest, in about 15 minutes, and downtown Tampa, 22 miles east, in about 30. Several major medical facilities are also nearby, including HCA Florida Largo Hospital and Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater. For those who prefer to take public transportation, Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has bus routes along Ulmerton Road that connect riders around the town and the region.
