Country Club Estates
Ranch-style homes on spacious lots
Tall Italian cypress trees and oleanders rest along the area’s flat, sidewalk-lined streets. Brick ranch-style homes from the 1960s through the 1980s are prevalent, but there are a few more modern ranch-style houses as well. “People who buy in Country Club Estates are likely looking for a bigger home with a bigger piece of land and buying an older home doesn’t scare them,” says Kameron Hill, associate broker with Coldwell Banker Legacy Elite, who has lived in Las Cruces for more than 25 years. “All of our new development is going to be smaller homes and smaller land.” With a median lot size of nearly a quarter acre, owners have enough space to add backyard pools or shaded patios. Most listings run between $270,000 and $400,000.A neighboring elementary school, a high school rivalry and NMSU
Kids can begin their learning at Jornada Elementary School, which earns a B on Niche and is within walking distance of some neighborhood homes. Sierra Middle School also receives a B rating, and Mayfield High School gets a B-minus. Mayfield has a long-running sports rivalry with Las Cruces High School. Each year, the two schools compete in a series of events, culminating in a football game. The losing school takes home the trophy and is required to display it in the front office, with the other school’s name facing out. New Mexico State University is just 5 miles south, offering more than 180 majors. Top NMSU scholars can take advanced courses through the school’s William Conroy Honors College.Shops along Route 70 and green chile toppings on everything
Restaurants and stores line U.S. Route 70, which runs just south of the community. There’s an Albertsons, Lowe’s and Kohl’s nearby. Some people drive to the Mesilla Valley Mall, about 5 miles south, for a larger selection. There are also a few fast-food places and Spanish Kitchen, a locally owned Mexican restaurant. “For authentic Mexican food, there are so many good choices in Las Cruces,” Hill says. “I prefer Nopalito Restaurant — they have really good red enchiladas and a green chile salsa that is to die for. You’re going to get green chiles on everything here.” At Caliche’s Frozen Custard, patrons can even order a green chile sundae. On Saturday mornings throughout most of the year, locals can shop at the Farmers & Crafts Market of Las Cruces, which takes place along Main Street in downtown Las Cruces. Some farmers bring fresh chiles or other produce, but most vendors sell handmade crafts.Country Club Estates Park and other nearby recreation
Despite its name, there is no country club within the neighborhood. Sidewalks lead to Country Club Estates Park, a large grassy lot lined with mulberry trees. There’s a soccer field, a small playground and some shaded picnic tables. Apodaca Park, 1 mile south, has a tennis court and a baseball field. The Las Cruces Skate Park and the Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center offer more recreation about 3 miles away.Hiking trails wind along the rocky slopes at Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument, 15 miles east, and White Sands National Park is just 60 miles east.
Fall festivals, the Pecan Festival and NMSU events
Festivals often take place in fall, when the weather is the mildest, Hill says. The Mesilla Valley Maze, a few miles west, hosts an annual fall festival with stick horse races, a watermelon-eating contest and pumpkin picking. The city’s Pecan Festival takes place in April at Young Park, and NMSU games and theatrical productions keep residents busy throughout the school year.Car travel and commuter logistics
Sidewalks allow for travel around the neighborhood and Roadrunner Transit buses pick up passengers along Elks Drive, but “pretty much everyone in New Mexico has their own car,” Hill says. “We’re just not set up for public transportation.” With U.S. Route 70 along the southern border and Interstate 25 a short distance east, drivers can connect with El Paso, 50 miles south, or commute to the White Sands Missile Range, just east of the Organ Mountains. “Most people work in Las Cruces or at the White Sands Missile Range,” Hill says. “A few people prefer to live here and work in El Paso, but that’s pretty rare.”Two 24-hour emergency rooms are nearby: the MountainView Emergency Center and Three Crosses Regional Hospital. Passengers can catch flights to Albuquerque at Las Cruces International Airport, about 11 miles west.Monsoons and summer heat
The city stays relatively dry throughout most of the year, except during monsoon season. “Monsoons generally happen in June, July and August and we can actually have some pretty serious flooding,” Hill says. “It gets pretty hot in the summer too, but temperatures drop about 20 degrees at night.”
