There’s no such thing as being “left out” in Lauderdale, Minnesota. From the Do Good Roseville Volunteer Fair at the local high school to the Lauderdale Day in the Park, the camaraderie in this small city is palpable. However, for those wanting a little more action, fast-moving Minneapolis is less than 5 miles away. Direct access to major roadways, lower-than-usual home prices for the Twin Cities, low or no HOA fees, and two golf courses right next door help explain why real estate here is so sought-after. “The funny thing about Lauderdale is that people who live there stay there,” says Mary Schumann, a local Realtor with Keller Williams. “There aren’t many homes that come up for sale.” Lauderdale is almost entirely residential, with its 2,000-plus residents living on a cluster of roughly gridded streets. “The housing there really varies,” Schumann says. “Some are very much in the fixer category and then some are well-maintained midcentury homes.” With Highway 280 nearby, residents can drive to the heart of downtown Minneapolis in 15 minutes or less. Highway 36 to the north connects travelers to Interstate 35 East, which will get you to downtown Saint Paul even more quickly.

Home designs vary from stucco Tudors and vinyl-sided bungalows from the 1920s to more recent ranch-style and split-level constructions. New Craftsman constructions have also sprung up in the last decade or so, while Brandychase at Rose Hill features one- and two-bedroom condominiums in a 1980-built complex. Home prices range from the mid-$100,000s for a small condominium. Single-family homes range from cozy bungalows in the $200,000s to spacious estates topping $1 million. However, those are not the norm, with the median home price at about $253,000. When lamenting the lower property prices, Realtors caution that homebuyers should remember that Minnesota winters can be brutal, advising that they should factor in heating costs when budgeting.

Open green spaces, golf courses and athletic fields
Two green spaces are open to the public in Lauderdale, both within a 15-minute walk for most residents. Lauderdale Community Park is the larger of the two. The space features various sports facilities, including a ballfield, tennis and basketball courts, plus a rink for both hockey and casual skating during the winter. Skyview Park is toward the southwest corner of the city, with a recently redesigned play area and (true to its name) a gorgeous glimpse of the Minneapolis skyline. Residents are also within walking distance of two spots to play 18 holes of golf: the public Les Bolstad Golf Course, owned by the University of Minnesota, and Midland Hills Country Club, an exclusive sporting and social destination for over a century.

Roseville Area Schools serves Lauderdale’s young scholars at several public schools within 15 minutes of the city. These include Roseville Area High School, where over 2,000 ninth through 12th graders can select from a list of 20 Advanced Placement classes to help earn college credit. Roseville Area Middle School welcomes seventh through eighth graders, offering clubs for skiers and trading card enthusiasts alike. This northeastern section of the city has welcomed several up-and-coming eateries and in recent years, including Falling Knife Brewing Company. Here, patrons can select from over two dozen original brews as they relive their childhood at the row of pinball machines. Other craft beverage providers in the area include Norseman Distillery, which offers cornhole and foursquare leagues and Up Coffee Roasters, which serves paninis, salads, wraps and more alongside coffee sourced from all over the world.

Lauderdale boasts a reputation for safety, with crime rates significantly lower than the national average. Violent crimes are particularly rare, sitting 67% below the national average. However, property crime is more common, though still 57% lower than the national norm.
