Locals here enjoy walks along the narrow pathways that wind throughout the neighborhood, while others take advantage of the limited traffic to head out on bike rides. Housing footprints in Prairie Meadows mostly run between 1,500 square feet and 4,000 square feet and price points mainly run between $300,000 and $400,000 depending on size and condition.
Holcom Park and trail access to scenic spaces and fishing holes
In addition to its fitness facilities, the 19,000-square-foot Holcom Park Recreation Center has a gym for both pick-up and organized basketball games. The facility also has a game room complete with pool and air hockey tables. Outside locals will find a playground and bocce ball court. The park’s other major attraction is the Holcom Sports Complex, a destination for youth sports competitions, which features four well-lit baseball diamonds and a pair of soccer and football fields. The roughly 12-mile South Lawrence Trafficway Trail also passes by Prairie Meadows, providing joggers and bikers with easy access to/from nearby green spaces like Green Meadows Park and the Pat Dawson Billings Nature Area. Green Meadows has a playground with a large jungle gym that children climb for panoramic views of the park. While visitors to the more than 40-acre Pat Dawson Billings Nature Area will find fishing ponds, waterfowl habitats and the occasional eagle sighting.

For out-of-state flights, many here go to the Kansas City International Airport about 50 miles east.
Chain brands and local staples in El Potro and Bigg’s BBQ
Iowa Street gives Prairie Meadows residents convenient access to numerous chain stores. “Most of what’s out there is larger, corporate foods. But, for example, Texas Roadhouse seems to be a popular place,” says Thomas Howe, an associate broker with McGrew Real Estate, who recently put up some houses in Prairie Meadows. A few local staples like El Potro Mexican Cafe, a small chain with several locations across east Kansas, serves up breakfasts like plates of chorizo, scrambled eggs and cactus leaves and Mexican fried ice cream for dessert. Fans of downhome cooking and Kansas barbecue will enjoy Bigg’s BBQ's many entrees. The restaurant's bar is also a nice spot for a cold beer or to catch up on the latest sports news. Big-box retailers like Target, Walmart and ALDI are a few of the area's grocery store options; and the Regal Southwind, the city’s only movie theater complex, is also located here.
