A small community in Jefferson County's countryside
In rural south Jefferson County are six residential streets in a 0.02-mile radius that make up the small community of Williamstown, known locally as “Billtown.” The quaint area of 30-plus homes is surrounded by sprawling farmland along Highway 24 with a quiet atmosphere. However, there are train tracks nearby with a railroad crossing, so that can disturb the sounds of nature from time to time. Oak Street has a Jefferson County fire station and two churches, including one that frequently hosts rodeos. While those are the only organizations in town, there are plenty of places to shop and eat 10 miles away in the city of Lawrence, and a few option in Perry, about 4 miles away.
Modest bungalows and ranch-style homes
Though Williamstown is out in the country, its narrow residential streets feature properties with lots of trees on a quarter to 1 acre of land. Despite being in Williamstown, homes are addressed to Perry. Most are bungalows and ranch-style houses built between the 1930s and 1950s, ranging from $110,000 to $220,000. Those who live on 3rd and Walnut streets have views of the wide-open farmland from their front yards, while others are shaded by the trees.
Rodeos at Crossroads Cowboy Church
The two churches on Oak Street include Williamstown Assembly of God, which used to be an elementary school, and Crossroads Cowboy Church. Crossroads, which was established in 2009, has made some big changes over the years. Bonnie Kern, a member of the church, says, “It started out in a tent. Then they built a big metal building. It had a dirt floor and it was heated by a wood stove and cooled by opening the doors and turning the fans on. In the winter time, we used to wear our farm clothes so we could stay warm. But now we have concrete floors, heating and air conditioning.” Kern adds that Crossroads is a bit different compared to other churches, as their worship music leans toward country Western genres, and they have their own rodeo arena. “You’ll see people in cowboy hats, cowboy boots and jeans,” says Kern. “Not a lot of outsiders come to the rodeos. It’s mostly parents, grandparents, relatives and the participants all cheering each other on.”
Shopping and dining in Lawrence and Perry
Locals can take Highway 24 to Highway 59 for a 10-mile drive southeast to Lawrence. That’s where they can shop from dozens of big box retailers and dine at a wide variety of local and national chain restaurants. For a more small-town shopping and dining experience, Perry, about 4 miles west on Highway 24, has a Dollar General and a few local restaurants, like Gambino’s Pizza and Perry Bar & Grill, a rustic spot with open pool tables and live music. From Perry, it’s another 20-mile drive west on Highway 24 to Topeka. Travelers can also drive 45 miles east to Kansas City from Interstate 70 in Lawrence.
Lake fun, hiking and horseback riding at Perry State Park
Perry State Park is a 12-mile drive from Williamstown. The park is home to Perry lake, with 11,150 acres of water to explore from the marinas. People are often out boating, kayaking and fishing around the lake, where there are also several sandy beaches for relaxing and swimming. Perry State Park has 20 miles of hiking/biking trails and 25 miles of horse trails. Crossroads Cowboy Church has its own guided trail ride for those who want to ride horses together from April through November.
Public schools in Lecompton and Perry
Students attend Lecompton Elementary, which gets a B grade from Niche and is about 6 miles away in the small city of Lecompton. They’ll go on to Perry-Lecompton Middle and Perry-Lecompton High, each of which earns a C-plus grade with the buildings attached to each other in Perry. Students seeking post-secondary education may attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
