LeClaire stands apart from the surrounding area

While the name translates from the French for “the light,” LeClaire is no winking glimmer. “It’s close enough to a bigger town but far enough away to have our own identity,” says LeClaire Community Library director Melita Tunnicliff. This little piece of Iowa is nestled along the Mississippi River and home to unique small businesses, a strong community and a rich local history. “LeClaire was a riverboat pilot town," Tunnicliff says. All the boats had to stop here and find a pilot to guide them through the rapids. They would go down on shore by the big green elm tree and wait for a boat to pull over. That tree was called the ‘Green Tree Hotel.'"
