Centerville-Nihizertown is a gateway to horse country
Centerville-Nihizertown is a vast rural area on the eastern edge of Lexington, Kentucky, making the community one of several gateways to the state’s renowned horse country. Here, grazing horses and cattle dot rolling bluegrass farmland. While the area has stables, it is also home to farmers growing crops like corn and soybeans. “It’s right on the edge of town and country, so you can basically be in a shopping area within 5 to 10 minutes, max,” says John Scott Durbin, a Realtor with Bluegrass Sotheby’s International Realty. “There’s also a new section, called the Hamburg area, where they’re putting in a number of hospitals. Costco has also gone there.”
Homes are on sprawling farmland with country roads
Two-lane country roads cross the community’s quiet farmland. Centerville-Nihizertown has a median lot size of 1 acre, but many here have more land than that. Long stretches of fencing and wood barns are common. Houses here include ranch-style, farmhouse and New Traditional homes. Properties rarely go up for sale, and the area has a median sale price of just under $600,000, compared to the national median of around $400,000. “You’re going to have anywhere from big, enormous homes to like a smaller farm home,” Durbin says. “You can go anywhere from $700,000 and $800,000 on up into the millions.” Centerville-Nihizertown has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, below the national average of 4.
Hamburg Pavilion is a few miles away
The community’s few restaurants include MirchiMex, which serves a fusion of Mexican and Indian cuisines and is located at a gas station. There are more shopping and dining options at Hamburg Pavilion, an open-air mall a few miles away. One of Lexington’s leading shopping destinations, the mall anchors a larger area home to grocers, big box stores, chain restaurants and designer brand stores. Regional dining chains include Malone’s and Harry’s American Bar & Grill. Malone’s is a steakhouse, while Harry’s serves bar food, bourbon and cocktails. Grocery stores here include Meijer.
The community is close to bike trails, golf and hunting
Deer Haven Park is on the community’s outskirts, providing local cyclists with narrow biking paths that wind through the woods. The park also has open spaces for dog owners to let their pets roam. Deer Haven offers access to the Brighton Rail Trail, which spans a few miles and goes farther into the city. Many here live within minutes of Greenbrier Golf & Country Club, which has a private 18-hole course, swimming pools and a fishing lake. Durbin says the area also offers one of the region’s few fox hunting grounds. “The farmers allow us to ride across their farms,” he says.
Students may attend highly rated Lexington schools
Depending on where they live, students may start at Garrett Morgan, Athens Chilesburg or Brenda Cowan elementary schools. Garrett Morgan and Brenda Cowan receive A-minus grades from Niche, while Athens Chilesburg gets an A. Mary E. Britton Middle School, which opened in 2025, serves the community. Sixth to eighth graders may also attend Edythe J. Hayes Middle School, which gets an A grade. Students may finish at Henry Clay and Frederick Douglass high schools, both of which receive A-minus grades. Frederick Douglass High’s successes in 2025 included its girls basketball team winning a regional title.
Shopping mall hosts live music and food trucks
In addition to shopping, Hamburg Pavilion hosts annual events like Food Trucks & Tunes, a weekly live music series in June.
Todds Road and I-75 provide commuter routes
Commuters may take Todds Road to downtown Lexington, about 10 miles west. The community also has quick access to Interstate 75, which provides a route to other cities outside Lexington. Centerville-Nihizertown is less than 20 miles east of Blue Grass Airport, the region’s hub for commercial flights. Baptist Health Hamburg is the nearest hospital, located 5 miles from the heart of the community.
