Acreage properties give Coletown some of the highest home values in Lexington
Coletown offers a mix of land listings and pre-built multi-acre estates. Prices vary greatly and depend primarily on acreage. Home values here can range from around $500,000 to upwards of $3 million. On the lower end of the range, $500,000 to $1 million can typically buy a ranch-style or new traditional home situated on 3 to 5 acres, while those spending $1-to-$3 million, can purchase a 5,000 square-foot custom home on up to 90 acres. Due to its large lot sizes, Coletown's average home value is about $400,000 higher than that of the Lexington metro area.Punchestown Stable and Raven Run Nature Sanctuary
Horse culture is a big part of living in Coletown, and Meier operates Punchestown Stable, which boards horses and trains riders in the neighborhood. “We bring in kids and teach them how to ride,” she says. It’s a good life for a kid. They get to learn the responsibility of taking care of a horse and become part of a barn family, so to speak.” Another neighborhood attraction is the expansive Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. “Raven Run has close to 70,000 visitors annually who come from all over,” says Jennifer Hubbard-Sanchez, the superintendent of natural areas for Lexington Parks & Recreation. “We have lots of local hikers and families who are regulars to the park, some hiking weekly and even a few who visit daily.” The park offers 10 miles of trails that wind through meadows, woodlands and Kentucky Bluegrass habitat. “Close to the sanctuary is also Jacobson Park, one of the city’s most visited parks, which has adaptive watersports, a dog park, spraygrounds and hosts fun events throughout the year, including a Friday Flicks movie showing weekly in the summer,” Hubbard-Sanchez says. Three miles west, the Wicked World Scaregrounds attracts visitors each Halloween season with its multiple award-winning haunted houses.Highly rated Fayette County Public Schools
Students in Coletown attend Fayette County Public Schools, a district with an A-minus grade on Niche. They start at the A-minus-rated Brenda Cowan Elementary School before continuing to the A-rated Edythe J. Hayes Middle School, which Niche ranks as the second best public middle school in the Lexington area. Then, they go to the A-minus-rated Henry Clay High School, which Niche calls the third best public high school in the Lexington area. Henry Clay High School is home to the Liberal Arts Academy, an AP-focused gifted and talented program with an internationally competing Model United Nations team and a state champion speech and debate team, and hosts the district’s only Army JROTC program.Jazz on the Porch at Talon Winery
“Right next to me, within walking distance, is the Talon Winery, and they have a beautiful setup there,” Meier says. “They do Jazz on the Porch on Friday nights in the summer. A jazz band comes in, and you bring your own appetizer – a cheese plate or fruit or whatever – and you buy their wine. It’s super fun. When we’re in town, we get a group of people over there and go. It’s a great place to hang out when the weather’s good, drink some wine, and everyone brings a snack to share.”Fifteen minutes from downtown Lexington
Coletown is a car-dependent neighborhood 10 miles southeast of downtown Lexington via Richmond Road. “I can make it into downtown in about 15 minutes,” Meier says. She does note, however, that the area’s population growth has affected traffic. “There’s been a huge amount of growth,” she says. “There’s a lot more traffic than there used to be.” There is no public transit in this neighborhood. The nearest hospital is CHI Saint Joseph Health East, 6 miles north. The Blue Grass Airport is 14 miles northwest.Live music at wineries and local restaurants overlooking the Kentucky River
Coletown has several restaurants and wineries in the neighborhood. “People do go out to eat a lot here,” Meier says. “It’s a very social, nice group of people.” Boonedogs is a local spot serving gourmet hot dogs, wings, bourbon and beer on picnic tables in a grassy field. The restaurant hosts live music in its yard – often classic Kentucky bluegrass – and has an annual hot dog eating contest each July. To the south, Proud Mary BBQ serves Southern seafood and barbecue on a patio overlooking the Kentucky River, also often accompanied by live music. Jean Farris Winery & Bistro serves local wines alongside a full menu of seasonal American fare, and Grimes Mill Winery has a popular Friday afternoon happy hour, plus cooking classes and barrel tastings. Residents can get groceries at the Kroger 5 miles north in Hartland. For additional shopping, the Fayette Mall – the largest shopping center in Kentucky with nearly 200 retailers – is 9 miles northwest.Crime
Coletown has a 1 out of 10 CAP Index crime score, below the national average of 4.
