A laidback lifestyle southeast of Lexington
Coletown is a rural community located in the Bluegrass region of Kentucky, about 10 miles southeast of Lexington. The area borrows its name from Milley Cole, a former slave who inherited land here in the early 19th century. While the area was slow to grow — in 1971 Coletown had only 30 residents — today, it's home to a population of over 1,300. One of Coletown's best-known destinations is the 700-acre Raven Run Nature Sanctuary, a preservation of pure Kentucky bluegrass, popular with hikers and wildlife enthusiasts alike. Complementing the area’s natural beauty, residents will also find several scenic restaurants and wineries. Providing its residents with an escape from big-city living, Coletown offers a balance between rural and urban, featuring multi-acre lots and large homes, only 10 miles from the heart of Lexington. “I moved from the Midwest in 1996, and it’s a very different kind of people here,” says resident Sarah Meier. “You go to the grocery store, and everyone is friendly. People smile at you. It’s a different lifestyle and a different kind of people than in more northern cities. Everything is more friendly and go-with-the-flow. I have some people that move here from out of state to board or take lessons, and I always tell everybody that calls me that Lexington is an absolutely fantastic place to live, especially this side of town.”

Punchestown Stable and Raven Run Nature Sanctuary
Horse culture is a big part of living in Coletown, and Meier operates Punchestown Stable, which boards horses and trains riders in the neighborhood. “We bring in kids and teach them how to ride,” she says. It’s a good life for a kid. They get to learn the responsibility of taking care of a horse and become part of a barn family, so to speak.” Another neighborhood attraction is the expansive Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. “Raven Run has close to 70,000 visitors annually who come from all over,” says Jennifer Hubbard-Sanchez, the superintendent of natural areas for Lexington Parks & Recreation. “We have lots of local hikers and families who are regulars to the park, some hiking weekly and even a few who visit daily.” The park offers 10 miles of trails that wind through meadows, woodlands and Kentucky Bluegrass habitat. “Close to the sanctuary is also Jacobson Park, one of the city’s most visited parks, which has adaptive watersports, a dog park, spraygrounds and hosts fun events throughout the year, including a Friday Flicks movie showing weekly in the summer,” Hubbard-Sanchez says. Three miles west, the Wicked World Scaregrounds attracts visitors each Halloween season with its multiple award-winning haunted houses.

Acreage properties give Coletown some of the highest home values in Lexington
Coletown offers a mix of land listings and pre-built multi-acre estates. Prices vary greatly and depend primarily on acreage. Home values here can range from around $500,000 to upwards of $3 million. Fifteen minutes from downtown Lexington
Coletown is a car-dependent neighborhood 10 miles southeast of downtown Lexington via Richmond Road. “I can make it into downtown in about 15 minutes,” Meier says. She does note, however, that the area’s population growth has affected traffic. “There’s been a huge amount of growth,” she says. “There’s a lot more traffic than there used to be.” There is no public transit in this neighborhood. Live music at wineries and local restaurants overlooking the Kentucky River
Coletown has several restaurants and wineries in the neighborhood. “People do go out to eat a lot here,” Meier says. “It’s a very social, nice group of people.” Boonedogs is a local spot serving gourmet hot dogs, wings, bourbon and beer on picnic tables in a grassy field. The restaurant hosts live music in its yard – often classic Kentucky bluegrass – and has an annual hot dog eating contest each July. To the south, Proud Mary BBQ serves Southern seafood and barbecue on a patio overlooking the Kentucky River, also often accompanied by live music. Jean Farris Winery & Bistro serves local wines alongside a full menu of seasonal American fare, and Grimes Mill Winery has a popular Friday afternoon happy hour, plus cooking classes and barrel tastings. Residents can get groceries at the Kroger 5 miles north in Hartland. For additional shopping, the Fayette Mall – the largest shopping center in Kentucky with nearly 200 retailers – is 9 miles northwest.
Jazz on the Porch at Talon Winery
“Right next to me, within walking distance, is the Talon Winery, and they have a beautiful setup there,” Meier says. “They do Jazz on the Porch on Friday nights in the summer. A jazz band comes in, and you bring your own appetizer – a cheese plate or fruit or whatever – and you buy their wine. It’s super fun. When we’re in town, we get a group of people over there and go. It’s a great place to hang out when the weather’s good, drink some wine, and everyone brings a snack to share.”
