Hamburg offers shopping, dining and easy commutes in East Lexington
Hamburg is well known across Lexington as a destination for shopping and dining, but residents also appreciate its quiet suburban lifestyle and easy access to major roads. At Hamburg Pavilion, you’ll find dozens of national retailers and big-box stores, plus a mix of locally owned and chain restaurants. Each subdivision here has its own style, but they share a peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere. New Circle Road and Interstate 75 make it easy to commute anywhere in the region, and Downtown Lexington is just 6 miles away.
A mix of subdivisions, condos and apartments to choose from
Most of Hamburg is made up of subdivisions where New Traditional homes sit along curved streets and cul-de-sacs. The styles of these vary by neighborhood and include Craftsman, colonial-style, modern farmhouses and Mediterranean-inspired designs. Most were built between the 1990s and the 2020s, and you can find new construction east of I-75. A small pocket of midcentury Cape Cod homes and cottages is on the west side of New Circle Road. Townhouses and condos are also available, and renters can find plenty of apartment complexes and rental homes throughout the area.
What home prices are like in Hamburg
The median home sale price in Hamburg is in the lower $400,000s, above Lexington’s overall median and that of nearby neighborhoods like Woodhill, Gleneagles and Eastland Parkway, but below that of Andover Forest. Home prices usually vary based on location. Here’s what you can expect:
Homes west of New Circle Road range from the mid-$100,000s to the upper $300,000s.
Homes in subdivisions off Liberty or Winchester roads range from the upper $200,000s to the upper $600,000s.
Homes in the Tuscany subdivision range from the lower $500,000s to around $1.4 million.
Homes east of I-75 range from the lower $400,000s to the lower $700,000s.
Townhouses and condos throughout the area range from the upper $100,000s to the lower $500,000s.
Some subdivisions also have a monthly HOA fee; typically, when they have them, single-family homes have monthly fees under $30, while those for condos and townhouses can climb up to $300 per month.
A suburban vibe with everyday conveniences
Hamburg has a distinct suburban feel, with subdivisions near busy roadways and shopping areas. “From shopping to restaurants, things to do, all of the conveniences that you might be looking for are going to be in Hamburg,” says Victoria Byrd, a Realtor with Indigo and Co. Realty who’s sold homes in the area for over two years. Though the houses can sit pretty close to each other, each still has room for a front and a backyard. It’s a popular community for families and those who want a slower pace without sacrificing city conveniences.
From big retailers at Hamburg Pavilion to local dining favorites
Hamburg is one of Lexington’s major shopping hubs. Much of the retail is centered around Hamburg Pavilion, a collection of national retailers like Target, Kohl’s, At Home and more. Grocery stores like Costco and Meijer are nearby. The area is also packed with restaurants, from fast-food chains to beloved locally owned spots like Malone’s, an upscale steakhouse. “It's a very busy restaurant,” Byrd says. “They have a salad that everyone loves called the Lexingtonian.” Byrd also recommends The Local Taco, a casual Tex-Mex restaurant. There’s more shopping in the neighborhood’s east, including Sam’s Club and the East Lexington Peddler’s Mall, plus restaurants like Liberty Road Café and Pasta Garage Italian Café.
Kids can attend zoned or magnet schools
The highly rated Fayette County Public Schools district serves the area. The district offers address-based enrollment, so, depending on where they live, kids might attend one of three elementary schools and one of two middle schools. The highly rated Frederick Douglas High School serves the whole community. Families can also apply to the district's magnet schools, such as the Carter B. Woodson Academy, an all-boys middle and high school that offers a college-prep curriculum focusing on African American history and culture.
A convenient location for commuting within and beyond Lexington
Hamburg’s location near New Circle Road and I-75 makes it ideal for commuters. “It is close to the interstate, so it is very sought after. You can work outside of Lexington and commute back,” says Jeremy Perryman, a Realtor with United Real Estate Lexington and a resident in the area. The 6-mile drive to Downtown Lexington or the University of Kentucky takes around 20 minutes, depending on traffic. If you work outside of Lexington, Georgetown and Winchester are around 19 miles away, Richmond is 23 miles away and Frankfort is around 35 miles away.
Where residents go for parks, trails and recreation
When you want to get outside, there are a few parks and recreational spaces in the area, plus several more nearby. They include:
Johnson Heights Park, a green space with a playground and walking trail
The Liberty Park Trail, a multi-use path that joins with the Brighton Rail Trail to create a 3-mile path
Whitaker Family YMCA, a fitness center with an indoor swimming pool and an outdoor splash pad
Idle Hour Country Club, a private golf course and tennis facility
Pleasant Ridge Park, a large park with an off-leash dog area, a playground and lots of open green space
