Part of an affluent group of Lexington neighborhoods
Lansdowne Shadeland East — or simply Shadeland East as its commonly known — is a Lexington neighborhood known for its spacious brick and stone homes and Ecton Park, which sits at the heart of the community. “The park is really nice. Back in the '70s, most people looking to buy had younger children and wanted to be there for the park activities. Shadeland East still has an active community,” says Donna Elder, an associate broker with Re/Max Creative Realty. At Ecton Park, youth play sports and the park hosts seasonal festivals like a free summer jazz concert series. Residents here can walk — or even drive golf carts — to several staples along Romany Road, including a local drugstore that serves up milkshakes and fountain sodas. Shadeland East is also within walking distance of schools like Cassidy Elementary and the private Christ the King Catholic School.

Stately Colonials, ramblers and midcentury homes
Mature trees line this neighborhood’s quiet streets, and provide shade to residents as they stroll the community's sidewalks. Dry leaves blanket lawns in the fall, and residents use their yard spaces during the holiday season to put up inflatable decorations. Many homes have footprints of several thousand square feet, and the architecture consists mainly of Colonial Revivals and large ranch-style houses. There are also a few midcentury-style homes, Cape Cods and groups of brick townhouses here too. Housing costs in Shadeland East depend largely on each home's footprint and lot acreage. Homes no bigger than 3,000 square feet primarily run between $400,000 and $800,000, while larger houses on more spacious lots can go from the upper $800,000s to $1.6 million. Townhouses can go from about $200,000 to $420,000.

Several community staples exist along Romany Road. Rise N’ Brine Chicken Biscuits serves hearty breakfasts and the Wheeler Pharmacy is a decades-old institution with a vintage dining area. “The Wheeler’s drug store is like an old-fashioned soda fountain restaurant, where you can get a milkshake and a sandwich, and everybody knows your name. It’s very local,” says Whitney Pannell, the owner of Pannell Real Estate. Those looking for upscale comfort foods and cocktails can stop by the Tulip Bistro & Bar, which has an outdoor patio. Here, guests can start with a fresh fruit salad before moving on to the steak frites, or fish and chips. Kroger is a nearby grocery store, but the neighborhood anticipates the construction of a Publix in the near future at Romany and Duke roads.
