Shriners
Suburban Neighborhood in Lexington, Kentucky
Fayette County 40502
Stately ranches that reach the million-dollar mark
Many lots in Shriners are about a third-of-an-acre and allow space for mature oaks and groups of neatly trimmed hedges and flowering bushes. Small stone and iron markers planted in the road verges between the streets and the sidewalks showcase the houses’ address numbers. “It's a great location, it’s walkable and has an anti-suburban feel with its unique homes,” says Scott Peace, a Realtor with United Real Estate Lexington. Shriners’ architecture mainly consists of ranch-style homes, several of which come with extra touches like multiple dormer windows and covered front porches supported by wood beams. Colonial Revival is another common style here, and the neighborhood also has some duplex and apartment options. Decades-old houses with footprints of up to about 3,000 square feet primarily run between $600,000 and $900,000, while even larger, newer homes can cost up to $2 million. Shriners’ average sale price is just under $1 million.Respite at Clay’s Spring Park
The neighborhood is also home to Clay’s Spring Park, a peaceful green space that gets its name from the Henry Clay Estate’s historic spring, which residents of this community have restored. A small stone column serves as a marker for the spring, which is surrounded by a stone wall. “It’s a nice green space with floral areas,” Sheehan says about the park. Shriners also borders Lakeview Park, giving the neighborhood quick access to another scenic green space where children can burn off some energy at the local playground. The park also has a paved path that winds through the surrounding woods. Nearby, the private Idle Hour Country Club puts avid golfers close to a pristine 18-hole course. Club members can also enjoy other activities like swimming and tennis. Membership, however, does require an invitation and board approval.Henry Clay’s enhanced curriculum and Christ the King Catholic School
Highly rated schools at all levels serve the Shriners community. Cassidy Elementary School and Morton Middle both receive A grades from the ratings site Niche. Students here may then finish their secondary education at Henry Clay High School, which also gets an A from Niche. With Shriners bordering Henry Clay High, several students here live within reasonable walking distance of the school. Niche also ranks Henry Clay among the top 10 best public high schools in the estate, a rating helped by some of the institution’s enhanced curriculum. The high school’s programs include its liberal arts academy, which requires enrolled students to take at least 10 AP courses to graduate. The Christ the King Catholic School is a nearby private option.Festivities at the neighboring Henry Clay Estate
Shriners borders the Ashland Park neighborhood, home to the Henry Clay Estate. A historic property, the estate is one of the most notable attractions on this side of Lexington and hosts many events throughout the year. Festivities at the estate include “Jazz on the Lawn” held over Labor Day weekend, or "Living History," which occurs in September and honors Henry Clay’s legacy and features re-enactments and interactive activities for children.Located along Richmond Road and minutes from New Circle Road
The Lextran has several bus stops in the neighborhood, but many here drive to get around the city. Richmond Road runs directly to downtown Lexington, about 3 miles north of the neighborhood. Shriners is also about 1 mile from the New Circle Road beltway. New Circle is one of the city’s major thoroughfares and goes toward destinations like the Blue Grass Airport, about 13 miles to the west. Shriners is a few miles east of the Baptist Health and Albert B. Chandler hospitals. Chandler Hospital is the UK HealthCare’s flagship hospital, while Baptist Health is renowned for its maternity care services.Wheeler Pharmacy’s burgers and shakes and Sage Rabbit’s farm-to-table meals
Shriners is within minutes of several staples south of downtown Lexington. The locally-owned Wheeler Pharmacy has a vintage dining area where patrons can enjoy burgers, fountain sodas and milkshakes. Papi’s Mexican Restaurant and Bar is a favorite for Tex-Mex fare, while The Sage Rabbit serves farm-to-table meals and cocktails. The Sage Rabbit also has a covered patio for those who want to dine al fresco to enjoy the pleasant weather. Right off the Richmond Road corridor, Sutton’s Family Italian Restaurant’s options range from flat-bread pizzas and burgers to plates of pasta and shrimp and lamb chops. While local watering holes like the Shamrock Bar & Grille and the Western-themed Austin City Saloon are for having a couple of drinks. Kroger is the nearest grocery store, and Publix plans to soon open a new location a few blocks west of Shriners.Important to know
Shriners has an overall CAP Index crime score of 3 out of 10, putting it slightly below the national average of 4.
