Laid-back living in a family-friendly South Carolina community

Liberty, South Carolina, is a small city with a welcoming, small-town vibe. Located in the state’s northwestern corner, Liberty is a short drive from the natural beauty of mountains and lakes, yet residents can also get to local entertainment via U.S. Route 123. With its central location, fans of Clemson University sports can get to the school and all its sporting events right down the road, while Greenville is just 20 miles away. Liberty is also known for its extensive sidewalks and family-friendly community, so residents often "Greet each other or stop to talk while walking outside or doing some shopping along Main Street," says Megan Thomas, owner and broker of Thomas Realty. With schools, sports and shopping all in the neighborhood, life in Liberty moves a bit slower and "People often make time to enjoy being together," says Thomas. Between both city and country, residents of Liberty are free to enjoy a healthy mix of experiences, whether hiking in the mountains, going out for date night in Greenville or spending peaceful time at home on the weekends.

Shopping and dining along Main Street

For all their errands, residents can take a leisurely stroll or quick car ride over to Main Street to find plenty of local restaurant and retail options. Residents can stop by Liberty Bell to enjoy southern comfort food in a retro atmosphere with checkerboard floors and red vinyl seating. For a cold beer or glass of wine, Hops and Harvest is a bar with arcade games in the back and TV's for watching sports. For something sweet, residents can grab a fresh, homemade dessert at Little Bistro, and then go around the corner and listen to local bands play in the small courtyard on Front Street from time to time. When looking to cook up something at home, residents can get all the groceries they need at the Ingles.

Liberty-local options for entertainment

With the Pickens County Performing Arts Center, Liberty residents don't need to go far for entertainment. Whether catching a dinner show or watching a concert, this local performing arts theater has a broad array of performers, from international ballet dancers to well-known comedians and singers.
For some more family fun, the Upper South Carolina State Fair is held annually each September at the Greenville Pickens Speedway and features entertainment options for the whole family, like carnival games and family-friendly shows like Texas Tommy's Wild West Revue and The Fearless Flores Family's daredevil performances in their Motorcycle Globe of Death, which was also featured on America's Got Talent.

Historic homes at relatively affordable prices in Liberty

With an average sales price of about $240,000, homes in Liberty are about $50,000 less than the average for Pickens County, but come with larger lots than those in larger cities. The neighborhood offers a variety of single-family homes ranging from bungalows and ranch homes to Queen Anne’s and Colonials. “It’s really neat to drive through several streets and see so many unique homes sitting side-by-side,” says Thomas. Most homes listed here range from around $150,000 to $350,000 and many were built before WWII. These homes often feature 20th-century styles and have an "old-timey charm," with original wood siding or brick construction, says Thomas.

Heading outdoors at Freedom Park and the local airport

One of Liberty's hidden gems is the Pickens County Airport, which is tucked away just north of the city. Residents can use the airport for their own aircraft, sign up to take a scenic flight or just visit the nearby ice cream shop called The Scoop. Families with kids can grab one of the massive cones packed with goodies like marshmallows, graham crackers, cookies and whipped cream and then, once the sugar rush has kicked in, take them next door to play on the and burn off all that energy.
Freedom Park is also home to another playground in the area. Mulch covers the ground below the monkey bars and slides, and there are several gazebos where residents can relax in the shade. A paved walking trail around the park is also available to visitors looking to stretch their legs. Thomas says, “A lot of people like to go to Lake Keowee to get out on the water or go hiking at Table Rock State Park.” Residents can drive to Lake Keowee – about 15 miles west – or 17 miles north to Table Rock to enjoy the outdoors.

Getting around Liberty

To get to most places in Liberty, residents can simply drive along Main Street and find all the restaurants and shopping they need, or head to nearby towns like Norris or Easley just down the road. Liberty is also close to U.S. Route 123, so residents can reach Clemson by driving about 13 miles southwest to catch some college football, while Greenville is about twenty miles in the opposite direction for those looking to commute or simply visit the city.
