Pretty, quaint and close to what’s important
Eight miles north of Downtown Lincoln is the “pretty, quiet and almost quaint” neighborhood of Highlands. Quaint, largely because of a distinctive feature that pops up around the neighborhood. “The white fences really capture people’s attention,'' said Josh Beyer, a Realtor and the owner of Capital City Realty Group. "Not every home has one, but enough do that it’s definitely notable." Home buyers are drawn to Highlands’ traditional homes, schools and pristine parks. Driving proximity to Lincoln's airport, less than 2 miles from any point in the neighborhood, is also a key decision-making factor. “Business travelers and airline employees are frequent buyers of homes here,'' Beyer said. "They just can’t beat living so close to the airport. It really adds flexibility and ease to their lives."

New Traditional and expansive ranch-style homes welcome buyers
Highlands offers about 5 square miles of residential, commercial and green spaces, including a golf course and parks. While the neighborhood features about 1,600 homes built between 1970 and 2010, they don’t come for sale very often. Between June 2023 and June 2024, 65 homes sold in the neighborhood. They also sell quickly, generally going to contract within about two weeks. And while those white fences -- and a variety of other styles -- are prevalent, they're not universal. "In those cases, kids and parents get to know their neighbors pretty quickly when they move in,” Beyer said. New Traditional, four-bedroom homes have recently sold from about $350,000 to $450,000, while ranch-style homes have sold from $300,000 to $400,000.

A championship golf course and an aquatic center are big attractions in Highlands
Highlands City Park offers 10 acres with a basketball court, a playground, tennis courts and open green space. Highlands Golf Course, a regulation 18-hole public facility, sits between the residential areas and the airport, buffering some of the potential aircraft noise. Practice facilities and club rentals are available. During the summer months, it offers a swim and dive team, lessons, and a Family Swim Night every Wednesday.
Lincoln is known for its public art, and one of the city's more whimsical pieces can be found at the passenger entrance to Lincoln Airport. The Giant Paper Airplane, a 32-foot-long realistic-looking steel sculpture by local artist Shannon Hansen, sits at the intersection of West Adams Street and Northwest 12th Street.
