New Traditional and expansive ranch-style homes welcome buyers
Highlands offers about 5 square miles of residential, commercial and green spaces, including a golf course and parks. While the neighborhood features about 1,600 homes built between 1970 and 2010, they don’t come for sale very often. Between June 2023 and June 2024, 65 homes sold in the neighborhood. They also sell quickly, generally going to contract within about two weeks. And while those white fences -- and a variety of other styles -- are prevalent, they're not universal. "In those cases, kids and parents get to know their neighbors pretty quickly when they move in,” Beyer said. According to Niche, students in Highlands can attend A-minus-graded Lincoln Public Schools, the No. 1 best school district in Lancaster County. It ranks in the top 10 Lincoln school districts for diversity, athletics and academics. Fredstrom Elementary offers prekindergarten through fifth grade and receives a B-plus grade from Niche. Schoo Middle opened in 2009 due to demand for new schools in north and west Lincoln. It has a B-plus grade from Niche and offers programs for gifted students. B-rated North Star High is a diverse school with more than 2,000 students from nearly 37 countries. Students can take classes taught by staff from the University of Nebraska in subjects including math, physics and medical science.Living next to Lincoln Airport makes travel much easier
Getting to the airport is a quick drive from anywhere in the neighborhood, but Lincoln's StarTran bus service is an option directly to the main terminal entrance, though the service doesn't operate on Sundays. Inside Highlands, StarTran offers several stops on Northwest 13th Street, West Highland Boulevard and West Fletcher Avenue, the three main roads that surround Highlands.Downtown Lincoln is 6 miles from Highlands. The fastest route is normally via Interstate 180. While residents walk, run and bike frequently inside Highlands, car travel is still the most popular mode of transportation outside its boundaries.
Fast food and casual restaurants thrive in North Lincoln
Down The Hatch Bar & Grille “is a big part of Highlands.” says Saul Bakewell, a Realtor with Nebraska Realty and a real estate agent in Lincoln for more than 10 years. “It has lots of large tables, so it’s a great place for celebrations or getting together with friends to watch sports. Everyone in Highlands knows Down The Hatch, and they know almost everyone who comes in there.” D’Leon’s is a chain of local Mexican restaurants that specializes in fresh ingredients, authentic spices and reasonable prices. Residents can quickly get gas and last-minute convenience items at U-Stop Convenience Store on Fletcher Avenue. The closest full-service grocery store is Super Saver, 2 miles north at Fallbrook.A championship golf course and an aquatic center are big attractions in Highlands
Highlands City Park offers 10 acres with a basketball court, a playground, tennis courts and open green space. Highlands Golf Course, a regulation 18-hole public facility, sits between the residential areas and the airport, buffering some of the potential aircraft noise. Practice facilities and club rentals are available. Next door, the city operates the Highlands Aquatic Center, which includes a large pool with a zero-entry section, a water slide, picnic tables and a concession stand. During the summer months, it offers a swim and dive team, lessons, and a Family Swim Night every Wednesday.Lincoln is known for its public art, and one of the city's more whimsical pieces can be found at the passenger entrance to Lincoln Airport. The Giant Paper Airplane, a 32-foot-long realistic-looking steel sculpture by local artist Shannon Hansen, sits at the intersection of West Adams Street and Northwest 12th Street.
Farmers' markets and summer festivals welcome Highlands residents
The Highlands Neighborhood Association hosts garage sales, cookouts, pool parties and holiday celebrations. They also provide regular Facebook updates about road improvements, association meetings and holiday get-togethers.Less than 2 miles north of Highlands is the Fallbrook Farmers’ Market, held Thursday afternoons from June through August. The Fallbrook Summer Festival is held every June at the Fallbrook Town Center and features live music, food trucks, retailers and local artisans.
