Dream-chasing German immigrants first settled in North Bottoms
European emigrants settled the North Bottoms neighborhood of Lincoln in the 1870s, seeking housing, railroad jobs and a foothold in a new country on their way to one day owning their own farms. Families from the same villages clustered together here, creating distinct neighborhoods. While many did move on to farms of their own, the neighborhood's tiny cottages, narrow lots, summer kitchens, chicken coops, and barns still exist and serve as reminders of more than 100 years of North Bottoms' history.
Today, the urban village still attracts like-minded residents, but it’s students who rent many of the homes in the area and gather to tailgate on college game days. University of Nebraska's main campus and mammoth football stadium are adjacent.
“Staff and professors find North Bottoms ideal,'' said Realtor Matt Kirkland, the owner of Giving Realty and a real estate agent in Lincoln for more that 20 years. "They can bike to work and everything they need from dining, shopping and cultural destinations are nearby.”

Bike lanes link Hayward Park to the historic Haymarket district and throughout the Main Campus of University of Nebraska. StarTran offers more than 10 bus stops throughout the neighborhood.
The Nebraska State Capitol is a mile and a half south, and Lincoln Airport is less than 4 miles west. With Lincoln's typically minimal traffic, drivers can make the trip in 10 minutes or less. While residents often walk and bike to get around North Bottoms, cars and city buses are the most popular transportation.
Adjacent to North Bottoms is the historic Haymarket district, which provides most of the nearby dining and shopping destinations for North Bottoms residents. “A great way to get around Haymarket is to hop on one of the Downtown Trolleys,” says Mary Wreixelman, founder and a co-owner of Three Daughters Boutique. “They’re fun and practically free. When the weather is nice it’s fun to use the trolleys to go shopping and then out to lunch or dinner.”
Century-old homes and 21st-century condominiums are close to Memorial Stadium
North Bottoms sits at the north edge of the main University of Nebraska campus. About 400 single-family homes, most dating back to around 1910, make up 40% of the residences. The remaining 40% are apartment buildings or student housing. The rest of the neighborhood features businesses, retailers, academic buildings and one city park. Single-family homes are mostly bungalows and cottages, ranging from about $90,000 to $200,000. The condition of the homes mostly drives price variations.
