Lonsdale
Classic Colonial Revivals and ranch-style homes
Colonial Revival, split-level, ranch and raised ranch-style homes line Lonsdale streets. Most were built in the 1950s and ‘60s, with attached garages and long driveways on quarter to half-acre lots. There are also a few 1970s condo buildings on the neighborhood's outskirts, closer to surrounding commercial areas. Condo units typically sell for between $130,000 and $192,000, while single-family homes run anywhere from about $350,000 to $725,000. “If they’re priced right, they definitely move,” LaRiviere says, observing that homes don’t usually stay on the market long before going under contract. She adds that single-family homes on Lonsdale’s west and northwest sides tend to sell faster than those on the south and southeast sides because they’re insulated from busy roads and closer to the neighborhood’s extensive outdoor recreational amenities.Lincoln Woods State Park and the Blackstone River Greenway nearby
Lincoln Woods, Rhode Island’s first state park, is immediately south of the neighborhood. LaMontagne-Beausoleil says the historic park is popular for its forested biking and hiking trails. “They circle Olney Pond, where people also kayak and fish,” she adds. “And the Blackstone River Greenway has a bike path along the river, as well as athletic fields and picnic areas,” she says, referring to the 12-mile trail system that follows the river on Lonsdale’s northeast side. The Former Lonsdale Drive-In movie theater site, now a restored meadow and wetland, is just one of the scenic picnic areas on the greenway. Chase Farm, west of Lonsdale, is a preserved historic dairy farm with grassy, dog-friendly trails. “You can get local vegetables, meats and flowers, and you can walk your dog through the trails or relax and enjoy the foliage. There’s also a Memorial Day Parade that goes through the Lonsdale neighborhood and ends at Chase Farm, which often hosts festivals with food trucks and concerts,” LaMontagne-Beausoleil says. The nearby Moffett Mill, which manufactured wagons, shoelaces and farm tools in the early 19th century, is now open for property tours. LaMontagne-Beausoleil: “On the same road, Eleazer Arnold House and Hearthside House are historic houses-turned-museums that put on different seasonal events.”Highly rated Lincoln Public Schools
The Lincoln Public Schools district allows open enrollment, meaning parents and students can apply to any school in the system, regardless of their address. Lincoln Middle and Lincoln High are the district’s only schools for sixth through 12th graders. The high school offers Career & Technical Education programs in subjects such as culinary arts, computer science and international business. “Lonsdale Elementary has a beautiful public playground, and there’s also a nice walking trail that connects to the scenic Chase Farm,” LaMontagne-Beausoleil says. Lonsdale Elementary is centrally located within about a mile of most homes in the neighborhood, off River Road. All three schools earn A-minus grades from Niche. “The Blackstone Valley Prep Schools in this area are also great,” LaMontagne-Beausoleil adds, referring to the public charter school system that serves kindergarteners through high school seniors. The four-school network is tuition-free. LaMontagne-Beausoleil says Mount Saint Charles Academy, a Roman Catholic school for sixth through 12th graders, is also highly regarded. She notes that the A-minus-rated private school is just a 15-minute drive from Lonsdale.Lincoln Shopping Center is home to mom-and-pop eateries
“Most people in Lonsdale run their errands at the Lincoln Shopping Center off Front Street,” LaMontagne-Beausoleil says, noting that the small strip mall has a post office, convenience stores and several restaurants. 9 Twenty Café is a breakfast diner next to Lincoln Smoothies, known for healthy but sweet smoothies and shakes. Oz Tacos & Tequila, next to the H&R Block, has the “Best Tacos in Rhode Island,” according to RI Food Fights. A few doors down, Gingersnaps Bakery’s owner and pastry chef is an alum of the culinary arts program at Johnson & Wales University in nearby Providence. For a full grocery run, there’s a Stop & Shop about 2 miles east of Lonsdale, across the river in Cumberland. LaMontagne-Beausoleil adds that the Lincoln Mall commercial district, about 4 miles north, is where locals go for national chain retailers like Target and HomeGoods.Quick commuting south to Providence
Providence, the state capital and a big regional employment hub, is less than 10 miles south of Lonsdale. The trip takes about 20 minutes via Rhode Island Route 126, which connects south from the neighborhood to Interstate 95. During rush hour, though, the commute can take longer. Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus stops line Rhode Island Route 122 on Lonsdale’s east side.
