Lindenhurst, named after the linden trees that once surrounded the village's original farmhouse, saw tremendous growth after the regional arrival of railroads and manufacturing factories. Today, the community has over 14,000 residents but retains a rustic and peaceful atmosphere. Sprawling forest preserves, marshlands and lakes weave through and around suburban subdivisions, imbuing every neighborhood with a connection to nature. Because of the village's residential focus, most residents head into busier cities, such as Libertyville and Gurnee, to work in healthcare, retail and customer service. Some people even make the 50-mile commute to downtown Chicago or Milwaukee for work.

Forests, fishing spots and freezing temps
Natural spaces are a significant part of life in Lindenhurst. Nearly 11 nature preserves are within 6 miles of the community, offering hundreds of acres of wetlands, woodlands and prairies. "I love being surrounded by forest preserves," Long says. "It's just nice to move away from the hustle and bustle of northern suburbs." Hastings Lake Forest Preserve's fishing pier is a favorite casting point for catching carp and largemouth bass. The McDonald Woods Forest Preserve connects to the regional Millennium Trail and the Grass Lake Road Bike Path. In the village, The Hastings YMCA offers alpine climbing towers, an indoor pool and community programs.
The village is roughly 7 miles from Gurnee, where Great Wolf Lodge Resort and Six Flags Great America are located. Six Flags has over 100 outdoor roller coasters, while Great Wolf Lodge is an expansive indoor water park open year-round.
Lindenhurst experiences heavy snowfall in winter. Roads are pre-treated with an environmentally friendly mixture called Beet-Heet to prevent ice from forming and refreezing.

New construction takes natural land into account
Waterfront homes, wooded lots and front-yard flower gardens are familiar sights in Lindenhurst. Common architectural styles include Colonial Revivals, ranch-style homes, split-levels and custom homes. The village's median price is around $350,000, less than the national median. Several recently constructed subdivisions have also joined the village. Heritage Park offers townhomes surrounded by open fields, and Briargate is the village's first large-scale master-planned, Age-Restricted Community. Over 200 ranch-style homes can access a private clubhouse and forest preserve trails.
Living in the village means protecting the area's delicate ecosystems. "A unique thing about Lindenhurst is our 50/50 payment programs for things like tree replacement and shoreline stabilization," says Karleen Long, assistant to the village administrator. "I think it's really important that even as we have new developments coming in, we still prioritize nature."

Five school districts serve K-12 kids
Three elementary school districts serve the village, with most students attending Lake Villa School District 41, which has a B-plus on Niche. Two more school districts serve high schoolers, with students attending either Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa or Grayslake North High School in Grayslake. Both high schools are A-rated, but LCHS partners with Lake County Tech Campus to provide dual credit courses in specialized fields.
Lakes Community High is a highly rated public school in Lake Villa, serving grades 9-12.

Shopping at Gurnee Mills as revitalization comes
Long shares that a revitalization project along Grand Avenue has brought more small businesses downtown, like a new cafe and sandwich shop. The district's Tax Incremental Financing designation and other incentive programs support incoming entrepreneurs. As the downtown grows, people visit shops and restaurants in Gurnee Mills, a large mall in a neighboring city.

Taking the Metra into Chicago
Though Pace buses and Metra trains run throughout Lake County, Lindenhurst doesn't have access to public transportation. The nearest Metra stop is 3 miles away, offering high-speed transportation into Chicago. Highway 45 and Interstate 94, located 5 miles away, are primary thoroughfares. The village is undergoing several road updates, including the ongoing Lake Shore Drive Reconstruction Project. A massive resurfacing project was recently completed in 2024.
The village's first-ever Restaurant Week
Each August, the village hall buzzes with Lindenfest preparations. This multi-day celebration features carnival rides, live music and a parade, all organized by volunteers. In 2025, Lindenhurst hosted its first-ever Restaurant Week, which celebrates the local dining scene and attracts new customers to explore different cuisines.
