Once home to Charles Lindbergh, Little Falls is a recreation hotspot
The first solo transatlantic flight officially spanned 3,600 miles from New York to Paris, but the journey began in Little Falls, Minnesota. The community was the childhood home of Charles Lindbergh, who went on to take the fateful flight in 1927. Today, roads and parks throughout the area bear Lindbergh’s name and the name of his congressman father. With a population of roughly 9,000, Little Falls is growing due to its many employers, year-round recreation and popular community events. “We’re a river town — the Mississippi runs through the center of town,” says Chris Gammon-Kruschek, the broker and owner of Re/Max Central and longtime resident of Little Falls. “We’re a bit of a recreational area. It’s definitely a vibrant community.”

The river is the epicenter of recreation
The Mississippi River cuts through the center of Little Falls, and much of the community’s recreation surrounds it. Charles A. Lindbergh State Park — named after the pilot’s father — sits along the river and offers fishing, canoeing and trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Pine Grove Zoo operates during the warmer months and has both animals native to Minnesota as well as species from around the world. Other parks throughout the area have baseball fields and hockey rinks, while the Little Falls Golf Course is a public facility.

New subdivisions and older homes make up housing options
Most of Little Falls is gridded, with the residential areas surrounding the small commercial core near where Broadway crosses the Mississippi. Homes from the early 20th century sit surrounded by tall maple and pine trees, and sidewalks run alongside the quiet streets. Bungalows and farmhouses are most common, often selling between the low $100,000s and mid-$200,000s based on condition. Some ranch-style and split-level homes are scattered in the area, especially on the outskirts of downtown. They can go from the mid-$100,000s to near $300,000. Newer subdivisions have been built near the edges of the community, with these new traditional and ranch-style homes generally going from the mid-$200,000s to around $400,000.

Festivals and events draw locals and visitors
For a community of its size, Little Falls teems with community events. The biggest of these is the Little Falls Arts & Crafts Fair which happens annually at the start of autumn, with local artists and artisans showcasing and selling their wares. “The Arts & Crafts Fair normally draws around 200,000 people to town,” Gammon Kruschek says. “It’s a big deal around here.” The Little Falls Dam Festival is put on every summer at Maple Island Park along the river. The event has live music, fireworks and a parade for residents to enjoy. The Morrison County Fair is also held annually in Little Falls, and the fairgrounds are the setting for several smaller gatherings, like car shows.
Broadway has great restaurants and local shops
The community’s main street, Broadway, runs through the center of Little Falls, crossing over the Mississippi. Restaurants, bars and local stores sit around Broadway, especially on the river's east bank. “We’ve got a couple really great restaurants,” Gammon-Kruschek says. “Ciao Thyme and The Black and White are right downtown.” Farther out from the center of the action, big box stores and supermarkets sit around U.S. Highway 10, including a Walmart and an Ace Hardware.
