Lockeford has history in northeastern San Joaquin County
Lockeford, registered as a California Historical Landmark, is named for Dean Jewett Locke, who settled here in the mid-1800s and took up ranching. After he built a ford across the Mokelumne River, the name "Lockeford" came to be, and though it's considered a town, it's not formally incorporated. The addition of the railroad in the 1880s led to further development in the Central Valley region. Lockeford has remained primarily rural. "People would live in Lockeford because it has a small-town atmosphere. It's a little slower-paced and quieter," says Dixie Waechter, a broker associate with Century 21 Select Real Estate.
Part of northeastern San Joaquin County, Lockeford has a population of about 3,900, according to U.S. Census estimates.
Bungalows, ranch-style and manufactured homes
Among the older homes are early 20th-century bungalows and farmhouses. Ranch-style homes were added from the 1950s on. Many contemporary and custom homes were built from the 1990s to the 2020s. Prices typically range from about $260,000 to $800,000, though there are some spacious homes on multiacre lots for over $1 million. Manufactured and mobile homes, about $70,000 to $200,000, are in complexes. "They have two different senior parks, and the space rent isn't as much as it would be in Lodi," Waechter says, referring to a small city about 10 miles to the southwest.

Lockeford Sausage brings customers from far and wide for its meats, including about 20 types of sausages. "People try to get in line first before they open. They line up around the block on a daily basis," Waechter says. Places to eat include Clay Oven Indian Restaurant & Bar and a Mexican restaurant, Coyotes. The Gypsy Bistro serves seasonal dishes in a space that was once a 150,000-gallon concrete wine tank.

Though Lockeford has some walkable areas with sidewalks, driving is necessary as residential areas are spread out. "Highway 12 goes all the way across almost the entire county. It joins Highway 88, and that's the official highway through Lockeford and Clement," Waechter says.
One of the closest medical providers is Adventist Health Lodi Memorial, and there are more options in Stockton, the county seat, which is about 20 miles away. The Stockton Metropolitan Airport has Allegiant Air service to Las Vegas, Phoenix and Denver. Sacramento International Airport, about 50 miles northwest of Lockeford, has over a dozen passenger carriers.
