Single-family houses built after World War II
Many single-family homes in Altoona Hileman Heights are Cape Cods, ranches and bungalows built after World War II and priced between $150,000 and $200,000. Larger homes may also include American Foursquare, traditional and Colonial Revival styles and cost between $175,000 and $300,000. Almost all the residential streets in the neighborhood are named after birds, including Lark Avenue, Quail Avenue and Robin Avenue. Grassy medians with trees slow down the neighborhood through-traffic and offer visual appeal. “They have islands between each set of streets, and that seems to attract people,” Baranik says. “That’s uncommon in a residential section.” The landscape is relatively flatter than many parts of Altoona, and the wide residential streets don’t have sidewalks. Many residents have decorative seasonal flags, flowering bushes and mature trees adorning their lawns. Pleasant Village Apartments and Logan Hills Apartments are both low-income, subsidized housing complexes in the neighborhood. These apartments make up a large portion of the overall housing in Hileman Heights.Calvary Cemetery and nearby parks
For recreation, the Logan Township Wellness Trail is a short, paved walking path around a grassy area, and the high school’s sports facilities at Mansion Park Stadium are also open to the public. State parks in the surrounding Allegheny Mountains offer more opportunities for hiking, swimming and fishing. The closest state park is Canoe Creek State Park, about 10 miles east, where visitors swim and boat with views of the surrounding mountains along Canoe Creek Lake’s 26 miles of shoreline. Hikers can catch views of the old Blair Limestone Company kilns and walk along Mary Ann’s Creek on the Limestone Trail, one of the park’s several trails. Within the neighborhood is a creek called Brush Run, though the dense woods along the creek's edges prevent flooding from affecting residential areas during heavy rains. Calvary Cemetery, established in 1893, borders the residential portion of Hileman Heights and continues to perform burials today.Students attend Altoona Area schools
Students in Hileman Heights typically start at Pleasant Valley Elementary School, which has a C grade from Niche. They continue to C-plus-rated Altoona Area Junior High School and C-plus-rated Altoona Area High School. The high school’s campus spans several buildings, with the two main education buildings connected by a suspended pedestrian bridge. Just west of the neighborhood is Mansion Park Stadium, which houses the high school’s athletic grounds: It has two football fields and baseball fields, a track, tennis courts and seating for over 10,000 people. Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, nearby off Pleasant Valley Boulevard, earns a B-plus from Niche and serves sixth through 12th grades.Events downtown and baseball at Peoples Natural Gas Field
Downtown Altoona, about 3 miles north of Hileman Heights, has seen a recent resurgence of community events such as the Blair County African American Heritage Festival in July. The community gathers to learn about African American history in the region, listen to live music, and check out local vendors. “We used to have the African American Festival every year, but it kind of died out. Paige Lightner is the one who brought it back, and it’s been getting bigger each year,” says Sue Kuhn, Altoona resident since 1989. “It’s great to see new, young blood and taking over and reinventing something.” Residents can also catch an Altoona Curve Minor League Baseball game at the Peoples Natural Gas Field, just a mile and a half south of the neighborhood. “I used to have season tickets,” Baranik says. “It’s really a social outing.” Neighbors and friends catch up while enjoying the game with a beer and a hotdog. Just west of Hileman Heights, the Baker Mansion is a circa-1949 Greek Revival estate that’s open to the public. On weekends, locals can tour the property to learn more about Altoona’s history and the Baker Family, a wealthy family that settled in Altoona in the 1830s and profited in the iron industry.Driving and taking the bus around Altoona
Interstate 99 borders Hileman Heights on the east. This major highway travels northeast to Penn State University, about 43 miles away, and connects to Interstates 80 and 90. The Altoona-Blair County Airport, about 19 miles southeast, has connecting flights to Philadelphia. Amtran, Altoona’s bus system, stops in the neighborhood along 27th Street and at the corner of 25th Street and Pleasant Valley Boulevard. Pittsburgh is the closest major city, about 90 miles west.Businesses along Pleasant Valley Boulevard
Pleasant Valley Boulevard cuts through the neighborhood and has businesses and facilities, including veteran's hospital the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Horseshoe Curve Lodge, Planet Fitness and O’Reilly Auto Parts. Eligible veterans of the U.S. military can receive free or heavily discounted healthcare at the VA Medical Center. Pleasant Valley Boulevard also has chain restaurants such as Olive Garden and Applebee’s. Drivers can follow Pleasant Valley Boulevard for about a mile to Logan Valley Mall, which has stores including Old Navy, H&M and Macy’s. For errands, Aldi and Lowe’s Home Improvement are off McMahon Drive. Popular local restaurants just west of the neighborhood include Al’s Tavern, a bar and grill with dim lighting and walls covered with neon signs and mementos, and Jack & George’s, a diner serving American food and treats from its dessert case.
