Collins is a newer Long Beach neighborhood with suburban character
Notched into the eastern edge of Long Beach, the residential neighborhood of Collins offers a small but convenient slice of suburbia on the border with Lakewood. Along the quiet neighborhood streets are a collection of mid-sized to large ranch-style homes on spacious lots featuring private driveways, garages and ample yard space. Many of the homes were built in the 1950s near the end of the city’s construction boom, which began in the 1930s. As such, Collins is a relatively newer neighborhood by Long Beach standards, and the home styles reflect that. “They are a little more midcentury, design-wise,” says Alan Fasnacht of Team Fasnacht Realty. The majority of homes in Collins are spaced out on horizontal lots, as opposed to the tightly packed homes on vertical lots common in the city’s established neighborhoods. The extra room outside means extra room inside, as the neighborhood’s homes offer significantly more square footage than the typical established Long Beach home.
Natural materials and landscaping add to the Craftsman vibe
A unique feature of many homes is that they incorporate natural materials such as stone. This adds to the Craftsman feel of the neighborhood and provides an aesthetic contrast to the custom landscaping that is common. While ranch-style homes are prevalent, the occasional eclectic multilevel home stands out, as do a handful of smaller homes in the minimal traditional style of the city’s established housing. Homes typically list between the low $700,000s to the mid-$800,000s, and they don’t last long. “They appeal to buyers because they sell right away,” says Fasnacht.
Collins Elementary is a central part of the community
Students can attend Collins Elementary School, whose campus takes up a large portion of the neighborhood, Jackson Middle School and Paramount High School, which is split between a campus for ninth-graders and a campus for the rest of the student body.
Walmart and WinCo, plus more shopping a short bus ride away
Taking up the southern edge of the neighborhood is a large shopping center anchored by a Walmart Supercenter. Several eateries provide convenient dining options. You can pick up a coffee at Starbucks or enjoy a relaxing meal in the cozy confines of Bahn Thai Long Beach. Residents also can shop at WinCo Foods and sample the seafood and Thai favorites at The Cajun Crab, both of which are within walking distance just off South Street.
The Lakewood Regional Medical Center is conveniently located on South Street across from the shopping center. In addition, residents seeking public transportation have easy access to buses that run regularly along South Street, which connects directly to Lakewood and Lakewood Boulevard, a retail and dining corridor just a short ride away. Among the favored stops is a popular neighborhood nursery. “H&H Nursery is the big thing that everyone knows around there,” says Melinda Elmer of Full Realty Services, Inc. The family-run garden center has been in business since 1976, offering customers everything from flowering plants to cacti.
Nearby recreation at Davenport Park and Ramona Park
Residents have access to a pair of parks in neighboring communities. Ramona Park is a buzzy neighborhood green space that includes a baseball diamond, two tennis courts, a basketball court and soccer field among an array of athletic amenities. Its community center offers youth programs and social activities. Davenport Park is a smaller, more tranquil space that offers half basketball courts, a children’s play area, a multipurpose field for additional recreational activity and a walking trail.
