Plaza offers suburban living on Long Beach’s northeast side

The Plaza is a quiet, family-friendly neighborhood in eastern Long Beach with mid-1900s homes and a classic suburban feel. It's the kind of community that throws block parties on the Fourth of July and has neighbors who know each other's names. One of the Plaza's biggest draws is its location right next to El Dorado Regional Park, the city's largest park, putting you steps from trails, sports facilities and kid-friendly attractions. Locals also enjoy nearby grocery stores, highly rated schools and easy access to interstates 405 and 605 for commuting to the rest of the greater Los Angeles area.

Midcentury California bungalows and ranch-style homes

The neighborhood's streets are lined with single-story bungalows and ranch-style homes from the 1950s. There’s just enough space between properties for driveways leading back to detached garages. Prices range from the $800,000s to $1.5 million, depending on the level of renovations. In general, prices are higher than Long Beach’s median, but the Plaza is less expensive than nearby Los Altos South and Los Altos North. "Over the past few years, pricing has gone up," says Erin Barry, a Realtor with Seven Gables Real Estate who has experience in the area. "It's still a highly desirable place to live … if the house is in good condition, it will sell pretty quickly, within 30 days."

El Dorado Park is the city’s largest green space

El Dorado Regional Park is right next door, and at over 600 acres, it's the largest green space in Long Beach. "You're very close to El Dorado Park, and being able to walk over to the park is a highlight of the neighborhood," Barry says. The expansive green space has plenty to keep the whole family busy, including:

  • Sports facilities for tennis, pickleball, baseball, soccer and an 18-hole golf course
  • Two stocked fishing lakes and an archery range with lessons
  • A nature center with educational exhibits and a wildlife trail to explore
  • An Old West–themed mini amusement park with a carousel and a train ride through the park
  • An outdoor summer event series, Concerts in the Park

The community is known for being family-friendly

According to Barry, one of the neighborhood's best features is its sense of community. "It really is a fantastic place to raise a family … it's a perfect suburban neighborhood," she says. Marvin Phillip with The Phillip Group at Y Realty, who has over 20 years of experience in the area, agrees. "Before buying here, I would say be prepared to get to know your neighbors," he says. "This isn't the type of neighborhood for you if you like staying tucked inside all of the time. It's also common to find families that have lived in their homes since the ‘50s and ‘60s." He adds that you can expect block parties on the Fourth of July and streets lit up with holiday lights in December.

Several local schools earn high ratings

The Long Beach Unified School District offers school choice options, so families can apply outside their default school zone. There are several highly rated public schools in and around Plaza, including Cubberley K-8 School, Emerson Parkside Academy and Millikan High School. According to Phillip, a lot of students from outside the neighborhood try to get into Millikan High, so living within its boundaries is a big draw. There's also Los Altos Grace Schools, a private faith-based elementary option that earns high ratings. With so many schools nearby, it's pretty common to see kids walking to class along the neighborhood's sidewalk-lined streets.

Shopping malls on Spring Street

The Plaza is centered around a shopping and dining corridor along Spring Street. You can grab everyday essentials at Grocery Outlet, Stater Bros. Markets and Ace Hardware, and there are plenty of chain restaurants to choose from, too. For something local, Grounds Bakery & Cafe is a go-to spot for bagels, and the Eldo is a popular gastropub serving up South African and American cuisine. If you live along Spring Street, some of these spots are within walking distance, but for the most part, Plaza is a pretty car-dependent area.

Commuting is easy with nearby freeways

With the 405 and 605 close by, Plaza is a convenient neighborhood for commuters. Depending on traffic, it takes anywhere from about 35 minutes to over an hour to reach Downtown LA, roughly 25 miles away. Downtown Long Beach is about 11 miles via the 405, usually around a 20-minute drive. "Getting to the beach is very easy as well," Phillip adds. "A simple trip down Studebaker and a right turn on Second Street takes you right into Belmont Shore."
