Exploring Recreation Park and quick trips to more outdoor recreation

The neighborhood gets its name from Recreation Park, which spans over 200 acres of the eastern half of the area. “It tends to be pretty busy and well populated with families enjoying the park and the playground,” says Angie Rebennack, a Realtor with Keller Williams Pacific Estates. “There is a community center with classes for people of all ages as well as a historic amphitheater, dog park and, of course, golf course[s] that [are] historic as well.” The park is also the site for annual events, from the Long Beach Family Arts Festival to the Long Beach Bluegrass Festival, when people sing along to live music and dance with neighbors. And for a change of pace, nearby Colorado Lagoon has a swimming area, and Long Beach’s shore is about 2 miles away.

Residents are close to their zoned schools, including Wilson High School, which offers a pathway program for students who want to focus on specialized subjects in areas like the School of the Arts or the School of Technology. Most people drive in the neighborhood; it’s about 2 miles to the shore or 3 miles to Downtown Long Beach. Recreation Park is also close to major job hubs, like Long Beach Airport, MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center and the California State University, Long Beach campus. “The area is very accessible for commuting, and we have many commuters who travel to Los Angeles, all throughout Orange County and even out towards the Riverside area,” Rebennack says. Residents can walk down the sidewalk to restaurants and shops along Anaheim Street, and East 10th Street has bike lanes that lead all the way to the Recreation Park’s parking lot. But for a more leisurely bike ride, there’s the Long Beach Greenbelt, also known as the Pacific Electric Right of Way. There are Long Beach Transit buses, but they mainly go to the shore or downtown Long Beach.
