Midcentury homes with detached garages
New West Side’s wide residential streets have sidewalks and mature trees. From R.A. Long Square, the center of Longview, gridded streets extend towards Lake Sacajawea. Most of the lakefront property is taken up by the hospital, elementary school and churches. Single-story World War II era cottages dominate the neighborhood with their tidy, no-frills grassy lawns. Cars can pull into detached garages behind the homes. Prices generally range from $265,000 to $422,000, slightly lower than the average home value for the Longview metro area.Shows and festivals in the Longview-Kelso area
Civic events and summer camps take place at Longview Woman’s Club Building, a 1935 Rural Gothic building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Car shows come to Longview in August, where folks can admire retro cars and motorcycles, drink beer and win door prizes. In May, the annual Kelso Powwow features dancing, drumming and raffles. For the past 37 years, this powwow has celebrated the culture of local tribes, like the Cowlitz, who are native to the area.Convenient shopping and dining along 15th Avenue
At Chinese Garden, locals can enjoy generous portion sizes while sitting in large, semi-circular booths. Chinese lanterns hang from the ceiling over the plush booths and scarlet carpet. Just up the street, Shamrock Bar & Grill is an unassuming locally-owned neighborhood spot that’s been around for decades. Stores and businesses line 15th Avenue at the eastern edge of the neighborhood. Here, residents can swing by Dutch Bros Coffee, drop off donations at Goodwill or go to the local dry cleaners. Most people drive along this commercial road, but 15th Avenue has sidewalks for those who prefer to make the short trek on foot. Shoppers can head to Safeway to pick up groceries and prescriptions. A few blocks away, the Triangle Center contains a variety of shops and restaurants, from Petco to Applebee’s.Walking around Lake Sacajawea
New West Side is shaped like a pie slice, and at the northern tip is R.A. Long Square. This park is the very center of Longview. It’s where Squirrel Fest is held every August, which celebrates the city’s signature squirrel bridges. This family-friendly festival includes face painting, square dancing and vendors selling squirrel-themed décor.Lake Sacajawea Park borders several Longview neighborhoods, including New West Side. The 127-acre park curves around the west side of the heart of Longview, stretching from downtown to Ocean Beach Highway. Cyclists can bike around the lake and stop to smell the flowers at the meticulously manicured Japanese Gardens. Fishing and kayaking are allowed at the lake, which is also the site of a kids’ fishing derby every April. Summer concerts and the annual Fourth of July celebration are also held there.
