The perks of living in Chesterfield Square, Los Angeles

Chesterfield Square is a South Los Angeles neighborhood gaining traction for its relatively low housing costs and character-filled historical homes. Living here puts you close to local businesses and city parks, while larger event spaces and job hubs are just a few miles away.

Chesterfield Square's home prices and housing styles

The community was originally developed in the early 1900s, and many of the original homes remain. “There are lots of cute little bungalows and Spanish-style houses,” says Sunny Jones, Realtor with Compass and LA native, who grew up in Chesterfield Square. “You typically get a good-sized yard, too.”

Fixer-uppers tend to sell between the low $500,000s and low $600,000s, but renovated homes usually range from the low $600,000s to just over $1 million. The median sale price is in the low $700,000s, well below the citywide median. “The area has a lot of charm and character, and it’s positioned to be moving upward in value,” Jones says. “People who live here really care about their neighborhood and want to see it continue in a positive direction.”

Commuting to DTLA or Culver City

From the neighborhood, it’s about 8 miles to Downtown LA or Culver City, and the Los Angeles International Airport is roughly 10 miles away. Chesterfield Square has several bus stops, and the Rail-to-Rail bike path gives cyclists a safer way to reach the Metro’s K and A line stations. That said, most residents find driving the most practical option for daily travel, and Western and Slauson avenues provide access to nearby freeways.

Public and charter schools near Chesterfield Square

Chesterfield Square is part of the highly rated Los Angeles Unified School District. The district assigns schools based on address, but it also has magnet programs and an annual open-enrollment lottery. Some middle and high school students go to Horace Mann UCLA Community School, which offers dual-credit courses through Los Angeles Southwest College. Families can also apply to nearby charter options like the highly rated Libertas College Preparatory Charter School.

Local restaurants and retail, plus more in Culver City

You’ll find several locally owned restaurants along Florence and Western avenues, including Tal’s Café, which originally opened in the 1940s. Another longtime spot is Flavor Table. “It’s a neighborhood staple,” Jones says. “It’s not fancy or anything, but you’ll get a good, solid Creole breakfast.” She says that Baba’s Vegan Café and Bleu Bird are also popular.

In terms of shopping, there are lots of mom and pop markets throughout the area, along with a retail plaza at the northern end of the community with a Food 4 Less and Home Depot. For additional options, Jones says people usually head to Inglewood or Culver City, where there are indoor malls and big-box stores.

Where Chesterfield Square residents go to stay active

Chesterfield Square Park, located at the northern end of the neighborhood, has tree-shaded picnic tables and a playground. Jones says that many people spend their free time at Van Ness Recreation Center and the Van Ness Aquatic Center, a few blocks west. “They host a lot of community events and sports,” Jones says. “There are some youth employment opportunities there, too, like lifeguarding at the pool.” Inglewood’s expansive Edward Vincent Jr. Park is also just a couple of miles away, and it has a variety of amenities, like tennis courts, ball fields and a pump track.

Proximity to SoFi and other event venues

Chesterfield Square is also within a 5-mile drive of some of Inglewood and LA’s largest event venues, including:

  • SoFi Stadium, where you can watch Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers home games, in addition to concerts
  • Intuit Dome, which hosts Los Angeles Clippers games, as well as major performances
  • Exposition Park, home to the BMO Stadium and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum
As Jones points out, living here puts you close enough to drive to big events easily, but you won’t get all the extra traffic in your neighborhood.
